New coaching search thread

Currie has to be more self aware than this. Maybe Amaker can win in the long term, but that's a big maybe. He certainly isn't going to up the excitement level at all with Wake fans. in the short term, the stands will remain empty. This hire desperately needs to bring some energy and excitement. Amaker doesn't check that box AT ALL.

I’ll take Amaker over Wes and Kelsey, but don’t know how Currie missed on Matta and Forbes. There’s no way Currie went from 6 names to 1 overnight. I wouldn’t lose faith yet.

I'd much rather have Wes than Amaker. We'd be taking a chance with Wes, but Amaker has had opportunities, most notably Michigan, and hasn't shown any ability to rise above mediocrity. If our choices are Kelsey or Amaker, just let Randolph coach for a year and try again.

FWIW, if WF doesn't hire Matta, it's most likely because he didn't want the job.

Interviewing doesn't mean that he will accept. Matta has a contractual obligation for tOSU to cut checks to him every month to take reasonable steps to consider other jobs. If Matta turns down the opportunity to interview for the only Power 6 job open, that jeopardizes his final payments from tOSU.

Also, as stated above, who knows the financial terms that Matta (through his agent) is asking for.

There's a high likelihood that Amaker might be here (if he is) for a second round interview. First round ended yesterday.

There's a low likelihood that we've chosen our coach after one round of interviews and negotiated the contract. Don't jump off a bridge yet.

I can’t imagine they would bring someone to campus in this current climate unless things were nearing a final offer. If they were just interviewing then they could do that over Zoom.

Amaker would be a super disappointing hire. Would much rather roll the dice with Kelsey.

Unfortunately Amaker kind of fits the pattern of Currie’s previous basketball hires

Tommy Amaker seems like a Bruce Weber-type hire... Though when I look back at Weber's resume it is better than I would have thought (even if I eliminate the 2005 season).

So Bruce Weber-lite?

Not particularly exciting... But probably sets a floor on how shitty we could be.

He's still, at best, #5 of the 6 candidates we've heard circulating. At least in my opinion.

I'd rather have Kelsey than Amaker I think, and I am definitely not a big Kelsey guy.

Great that he's recruiting at a high level for an Ivy league school... this year's team had the 38th, 48th, 127th, and 25th ranked classes, but finished 110th in KP.

If we end up with a guy like Amaker, I think it just speaks to where our program is after 10 years of crap. I'm going to give whoever we hire a chance and we all should, but we've all got to realize too, that this isn't the job we all think it is. I'm afraid we're going to have to settle for another at least partially risky hire and hope it works out to get us back up a few notches in the college basketball landscape.

I've heard it also jeopardizes a portion of his past payments too if he declines any reasonable interview requests.

I am betting mistaken identity. Currie masterfully kept the Manning firing under wraps— it’s not like he is walking around the quad with candidates.

i think babydeac said that was just leverage to get the buyout lower. pretty good news if we truly cut the buyout in half. but who knows the truth.

that tracks

Amaker would be very underwhelming, but I have no problem with casting a wide net and interviewing a bunch of guys given the current circumstances

Kelsey > Amaker, every day of the week

According to published reports, Matta's checks from tOSU end soon, like in a month or two. If he doesn't think he has enough to live on for the rest of his life, he will need to be more serious about getting work. That doesn't mean he gets back into coaching, but that is all he's done as an adult.
