New coaching search thread

Amaker could get us back to being "historically competitive" in that he will probably have us on the bubble each year, but he won't get us to the heights we saw with Skip and Dino.

And is it just me, or does this wreak of a Nathan Hatch hire? He's always wanted to turn Wake into another Duke.

If he is so great then let Dook have him when K is done.

What heights did we get to under Skip and Dino? February AP polls don’t count.

Umm Amaker hasn’t really won anywhere, what makes you think he’ll win here?

Have trouble understanding the word "if"? I haven't said whether I think he would win here, I just said, if whoever we hire wins, there will be excitement.

Oddly, I just said almost this same exact thing in a separate conversation. If there is no Matta or Forbes, might as well gamble again and hope you hit it big. Amaker might have a decent floor, but it's also likely not that far from his ceiling either.

Absolutely without question. Atleast there is some excitement with a somewhat unknown...maybe he will be our K kind of hire. However unlikely it may be you know what you get with Amaker. Mediocre. I'd rather be excited with improbable possibility than bored to death for another ten years with a mediocre.

Well to clarify, I won't do that. If they hire somebody like Amaker I'll just check back out again. Haven't cared for a while until just this week. Can easily go back.

On top of his record at Seton Hall and Michigan, it's concerning that Amaker has not built on his success at Harvard. In the five years between 2011 and 2015, he won five regular season championships and went to the NIT once, the NCAA R64 twice, and the NCAA R32 twice. His KenPom ranks were 71, 41, 93, 32, and 75.

In the five years between 2016 and 2020, he won two regular season championships and went to the NIT twice and made zero NCAAT appearances. (They were the second seed in the suspended tournament). KenPom ranks were 171, 112, 141, 114, and 110. By both SRS and KenPom, he has not had a single team in the past five years that was as good as his worst team in the prior five years. A significant, though not overwhelming, amount of their contributions this year came from seniors.

This is absolute garbage. Same bullshit Wellman tried to justify the Dino fiasco with. Plenty of teams are ranked top 10 and fail to advance in postseason every year. It happens. It sucks when it happens to you. But if you are top 10 long enough you will start advancing more regularly.

And February AP polls count to me. And so do November, December, and January. I bet they do to recruits and alot of fans deciding whether to go to games or not.

Garbage post.

To echo what others have posted, the one thing we know is that Amaker isn't a great coach. I'd argue he's not even a good coach, but that is a different discussion.

If we can't hire a great coach (Matta), I'd much rather swing for the fences on somebody who at least has the chance of being great.

It's pretty sad to think about how big an upgrade Amaker would be considering how disappointing a choice he is.

Amaker would just be a continuation of the [name redacted] and [paint touches] disasters. There would be no coming back from that hire, we'd be DePaul.

I would hope that Currie has swung for the fences and missed. The bad part is if we get an Amaker or another meh hire, we'll probably never know if he swung for the fences. It's not like AD's like to come out and admit they didn't get their guy.

In 23 years of being a head coach , a maker has 4 ncaa tourney wins. Nope. I’m looking for a guy who can get 4 tourney wins in two weeks and this ain’t the guy. Hopefully this is just an interview and nothing more, but if we hire amaker, then Currie has failed big time.

This year's senior class was the #25 recruiting class too - although it seems to have not really lived up to its ranking.

I can’t imagine any finalist would agree to to the job without the opportunity to tour the facilities in person.

I take for granted that Curry tried for better than Amaker. What we will never know is if Hatch/BOT squashed better candidates. Of course I also take for granted any involvement by Hatch is a hindrance to us having a winning basketball program.
