WF Basketball Transfers (In & Out): Jalen Johnson (UT) IN !!!!!!!!!

If ever there was a year to potentially not have a college basketball season, this is that year. Another thing in our favor! Wake’s fortunes are turning!

This is very possible. It will be interesting to see how the season shakes out.

This is the perfect storm of the virus and the beginning of top HSers going to the G-League. As the summer goes on, I wouldn't be shocked to see more HSers make that choice as they can now make up to $500K and get endorsements.

Wasn't there some of this when Prosser died, and there was talk that Teague, Aminu, Johnson, Woods, etc. might back out of coming to Wake and were on the fence. And Dino and others convinced them to stay and look what happened? Granted, they were big time recruits. And there was no Transfer Portal back then. Who knows what could happen once Forbes has time to talk with these guys and put his much improved system in place. If he's already talked to them, and they stay away, then so be it. Big time changes coming and I'm fine with that. It's a Rebuild, but at least we have a very capable coach for that task.

What happened? Three winning seasons, a number 1 ranking, two NCAA appearances under Dino.

If I'm Sarr or Chaundee and I can get a waiver to play right away next year on a team that has a legit chance to make a run in the NCAA Tourney, I do it in a heartbeat.

Playing for Forbes for one season is not going to be a fun experience. There are going to be a lot of changes. The practices are going to be tough. They will lose a lot of games. The younger guys will have the potential payoff of being part of the group that turns things around... But if you only have one season left, why not go to Kentucky or somewhere like that?

I'm psyched for Forbes... But if you committed to Manning (and played for him for 3 years) and then his polar opposite shows up for your last year? It's easy to say "no thanks" and move on, especially if you have options.

This ^^^^ From a former football player that went through a coaching change. The new coach is going to make big changes and will be looking to establish a new culture and build a program, not coddle some senior, to try and win an extra game or two. He will bring in new players and ruffle a lot of feathers. Why put up with all of that, if you can jump to a better team, with a chance of going to the NCAAT.

Aren't the best players in the portal Wake players ?
Considering how bad we were, that sounds absurd at first. But maybe? Forbes may find/know some player he sees can help his version of the Deacs next year.

LOL at the sky is falling crowd after a few players leave, better to get them out now so Forbes can rebuild his roster.

I'm definitely not saying the sky is falling.

I'm somewhat bothered by the vitriol being directed at our players... They committed to Manning and probably feel like he was done dirty. Given the "us vs. them" mentality that seemingly was fomented by Manning's failure, it makes sense that they might feel like they are being rejected by a fan base that is super excited by a long overdue coaching change. Agree with shogun6066 that they'll be remembered by how they left (and they should be)... But I'm not a big fan of GTFO, especially when these players are just exploring their options.

Also, re-building a roster in May is going to be very difficult, which is why I think we'll be REALLY bad this year. But Forbes has the flexibility to take existing pieces and bring in some talent for 2021-22, so hopefully it is just one more year of being shitty. And at least we'll have hope (and an entertaining, engaged coach who hates to lose).

Not sure if a one-time transfer exemption rule would help us or hurt us... Makes it easier to rebuild the roster, but also makes it easier for almost everyone to leave.

Seems like just about everyone has left already

They must not have the ability to think for themselves then. How could anyone logically look at it and say a coach with a terrible W/L record and an even worse record of graduating players was done "dirty." If the sheep want to leave, don't let the door hit them on the way out, we need lions and I think Forbes will get us lions given time.

It wasn't really a hypothetical. Sarr and Brown are absolutely among the best players in the portal.

On the bright side, maybe the ACC sucks (again) next year?

You make it sound like going to an entirely new program will be without significant adjustment to a new culture and surroundings with established players competing for minutes. Either way, there will be significant change and proving oneself.

Also, if the community agrees that Manning failed, I can see how you as a player would feel that you also failed. That’s certainly how my 20-year-old brain would work.

Here’s where it will be interesting to see what role Childress plays, since these guys were apparently loyal to him. If he convinces them that Forbes is worth staying for, will that overcome what Manning has told them? And will he even attempt to convince them of that?

As far as I am concerned, Sarr is the only one from this past season I don't blame for wanting to leave. He's a senior with a real shot at the NBA. Let him pick his destination (or stay).

The others can leave for all I care. This team has been a shitshow for years. If they were any good at basketball, DM would still be our coach.

Oh I said maybe because I haven't kept up with who outside of Wake is in the portal. Until yesterday, college basketball had become a waste of time for me to follow very closely thanks to Wellman.

In past years, most of these guys would be looking at a redshirt year at a new school. That would tip the balance to "stay" for many. Now they can go and play immediately.

Change is always scary to some degree. All these kids had choices when they came out of HS and picked a coach/college combination. Now the more important part of that combo has been changed with them having little/no input on the decision.

The portal and no sit rule gives them a chance to repick their coach/college combo. So they are doing that. Maybe they find Forbes/Wake the best for them. Maybe not. Wherever they end up, the decision is on them, not somebody else.

Do they (existing Wake players) want the school they know and a coach they don't? Or is a completely new situation better? The next few weeks will be interesting.

Not sure how anyone thinks Manning was done dirty. He got 6 years and he has a horrible record. Coaches do not get a decade to get out of the ACC cellar. He was given a fair amount of time and our team won 13 games. This was expected and warranted, period.

The transfer waiver rule hasn’t been approved and almost certainly won’t be for this upcoming season. These guys will need to sit out or get a special waiver due to the coaching change.

Just more crap caused by RW's ridiculous contract. Without it (and RW's failure of leadership), DM would have been gone last year and a lot of this bs would have been avoided.
