WF Basketball Transfers (In & Out): Jalen Johnson (UT) IN !!!!!!!!!

Tim Duncan is undefeated as an NBA coach as well.

I don't think it has anything with height but the skills needed to be a point guard/floor leader are more transferable to being a head coach than those of a center, especially within stereotypical position roles.

It's pretty clear the types of players Forbes wants to put on the floor. The only thing I hope we tweak moving forward and include in our game planning scenarios is a bruiser in the middle. That may not work well with the aggressive style of play we will likely have, but when you absolutely positively need a bucket, I'd love to have a 6'8"-6'10" 260-280 lb. post player who could dominate the inside. We haven't had that since Big E, IMHO. Collins was awesome, but he was a bouncy PF who ran the court well and had great post moves, but he was not typically a dominant force in the paint unless he had some space (that's not a knock against him at all, BTW).

All that to say, if we have a big PG and shooters, we will have a lot of interesting line ups to create lanes. It would slow our tempo, but I want a monster in the paint to stretch the defense even more.

Romello White to Ole Miss is a bit puzzling. They aren't very good and aren't seen that often.

Big heavy post players who like to bang tend to be defensive liabilities in the modern space and pace play. That's why the NBA doesn't care about those types anymore. Analytics show they aren't valuable.

Honestly, I think Ody will be fine as a 5 if he can get rebounds, make layups, and swing the ball to an open man.

Someone needs to make the three point shot a bit tougher. It's too easy now. It needs to be at a distance where the top players only shoot 33% or so. That will make it less of a gunner's league and one that takes overall skills.

I'd be happy with Mac, the Polish kid, and a grad big who mainly functions as a shot blocker/paint protector and is also an above average rebounder on both ends.

His final 3 were UGA, Vandy and Ole Miss. All three struggled last year, but Ole Miss returns four starters, and they have another solid grad transfer. Kermit Davis hustles and can coach too. Ole Miss will be better than either Vandy or UGA.

Totally agree and understand, but not all college teams run and gun like the NBA so they still have a role to play. I'm simply talking about options. And Ody will be fine, but it would be nice to have a bruiser as well.

ETA: I'm not talking about a space eater on the blocks, I'm talking about a dominant big man like Udoka Azubuike. In fact go back and listen to Forbes after losing to Kansas last year. If we can have a force inside, it opens up a lot. I hope Forbes goes after someone like this even if it may slow down the overall tempo of the offense. It's another card to play and can be a match up nightmare depending on the opponent.

I gotta go with R.J. here. "Tall guys can't coach basketball" is a dumb take. R.J. did provide a list of objectively good coaches that are tall in stature.
I'm sure one could produce a list of shit short coaches fairly easily.
The only Devil's Advocate I could say would be it seemed Zyglass was talking about HOF -mer college coaches and R.J. rebutted with NBA ones.
I think that can be dismissed as mere coincidence.
Again, bad original take.

You wonder why things get ugly here? It's posts like yours. There was no antagonism in my post, but you have to act like a classless dick.

Let's look at some other 6'3+ coaches who weren't bad:

Doc Rivers (NBA Champion)
Kevin McHale
Rudy T (2 NBA Championships)
Don Nelson
Fred Hoiberg
Rick Carlisle
Mark Pope (went 24-8 his first year at D1)
Bill Russell (won NBA championships as coach)
Juwan Howard looks like a good coach

There are less big guys. So, there will be fewer coaches. Also, big guys don't usually have skills like smaller guys.

Also it's not that "tall guys can’t coach". It's that they don't try on the same level. Saying "they can't" is a totally BS concept.

So, looks like big guys can coach in the NBA but short guys win in college.

I kinda lean towards this as well. I still think it's a bad take to claim tall players can't become good/great coaches though.

(And, yes, I know Rocket's not making that claim either. Just quoting his in general agreement.)

Forbes isn't going to turn away a guy like that if he can get one. But I don't think he (or any college program) needs to have a guy like that to be successful like it was in the 80s and most of the 90s.

Fair point and agreed. Again, I’m talking about options. It’s not necessary to be successful but it adds a dynamic that can be used to exploit another team’s weaknesses. We haven’t had that in a long time (a dominant force inside).

Lot of people have pretty shots that don't go in.

I hope he's a bright kid, but his college and JuCo choices don't show any academic interests.

We are really desperate if we are fighting for a guy who went to Mt. St. Mary's, a dubious JuCo and UNLV. At four year schools he has shot about 32% on a high volume of threes.

If we get him, I hope he proves me wrong. But he has done nothing to show he can come close to playing in the ACC.

Late, but how is South Plains dubious? Great coach, great program, lots of success.

It's sill a JuCo.

I love that actual college stats don't matter.

I hope he gets hot in a couple of early games. It will give Massoud more easy looks. Massoud should be getting at least 7-9 threes/game.

going back and looking at Conor's article on Forbes roster management so far , I definitely noticed the part where Forbes said he hasn't even talked with Wynn or Wright but that he did give Chaundee a couple of calls. Think we can put 2 and 2 together on how Forbes and staff feel about Wynn and Wright's future as ACC caliber players.

I think Wright and Wynn were basically eliminated from the team already prior to Manning's firing. Especially Wynn.
I was mildly hoping Forbes might try to talk Wright into returning, but it definitely looks like that's not going to happen.
Wynn is no great loss but Wright, while "being missed" is too strong of words for it, he could've been adapted to fit I feel.
