Non-Political Coronavirus Thread

i think the distinction that was being debated was: is infection LESS likely outdoors, or UN likely outdoors. I think everyone agrees on the former, but not the latter.

Correct.

Knowell said that it was unlikely to get Covid at the beach and backed that up with a statement that was something along the lines of "you are way more likely to get it indoors". Which is a logical fallacy.

Anyone else watching Prime Minister's Questions on C-Span? It is surreal to see the hall so empty with some MPs appearing by video. Boris Johnson being asked, in so many words, have you done enough for the British people is compelling.

That seems to be our strategy in SC. Our governor has been a joke through all of this, on the level of Georgia's governor. We're basically reopened now and people are hoping we don't see another outbreak.

What is more daunting will be in September, when you have flu season beginning along with unchecked covid-19. Charleston is uniquely at risk people everyone has to get their vacation this summer, bringing the virus with them to spread.

I'd hate to see another shutdown, but the conventional wisdom around my social circle seems to be we'll have 2-3 months of somewhat normal life before we are back to a shutdown.

I'm actually surprised Charleston hasn't had more cases.

Seems like a potential hotspot with the tourism industry, along with it being a massively popular port city and cruise city.

I think Charleston caters to an upper-middle class tourism group and a significant amount of those people will stay put. I'd be more concerned with Folly Beach or IOP as opposed to Downtown.

Looking at SC's numbers, I'm not shocked that Charleston is below Richland and Greenville Counties. I assumed from the start they would take it more seriously plus they have MUSC.

I feel comfortable walking outdoors or walking on the beach but I wouldn't sit on the beach in the same spot for the entire day.

Very fascinated to see what happens now that it is going to be pretty humid along the SC Coast for 3 months.

Myrtle is dead then

As long as you're 20 feet from the next party on the beach I think it makes sense that you'd be reasonably safe in the same spot all day. There's also a pretty good wind on the beach that breaks up the coronavirus.

Could one of our science experts please weigh in on this? Because my understanding is that the risk is basically zero if you're outdoors and like 10-15 feet away from everyone except the occasional passer-by (and you move farther if you see someone coughing/sneezing).

I just really enjoy, in particular, sitting on the beach in the same spot for the entire day.

No one knows. But I think the scenario you present is pretty safe.

sanitizing groceries? We bring groceries home, unload them, put them away in the kitchen as usual, then wash our hands thoroughly. What else you gonna do?

Some people take it to another level and spray down groceries with disinfectant. I have yet do anything like that, but I have been living off Prime Now and Walmart pickup to avoid going into large stores.

You can use disinfectant to wipe down the packages. Or at least the main grips such as milk jug handles. There is even a way to sanitize your produce but I haven’t gone that far yet.

I just think that is going too far, but everyone has to do what makes them comfortable. Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands. Once the stuff has been in your house for a day or so, don't worry about it.
