WF Basketball Transfers (In & Out): Jalen Johnson (UT) IN !!!!!!!!!

Is there a reasonable expectation that McClung could get a waiver to be eligible next year? He isn't graduating. G'town didn't even have a coaching change (like Sarr); G'town wanted him back (unlike Wilkins); and while WF is marginally closer to home than G'town, Gate City is still about 3 hours from Winston. I get that the NCAA is likely to be more lenient granting waivers this year, but unless "WF would be a lot more fun to watch if McClung is playing" becomes a waiver criteria, I don't see any ground for a waiver in McClung's case.

He has legitimate reasons that fall under NCAA waiver guidelines. Ewing and his staff allegedly pushed him to come back from injury early, and then when he entered his name in the NBA draft Ewing said McClung was coming back before Mac had taken any steps to do so and while he was still interviewing with NBA teams. In his last team interview this lead to confusion with the NBA team asking why Ewing had already announced he was withdrawing from the draft to come back to Georgetown. Add that behavior from the Ewing staff with the fact he would be moving closer to home during the pandemic, and there is a chance he could get a waiver.

Wilkins also has a legitimate claim for a waiver because under NCAA guidelines a coach running a player off a team grants consideration for a waiver.

Thanks. That makes sense on McClung; still think it will be a tough argument, but maybe, Mac will find some sympathy.

Agree that Wilkins has a really good waiver argument. VT wanted Wilkes' scholly (and used it) and told him he had no role on the team going forward. As part of Wilkins decision to leave, Young/VT has to support his waiver. Not sure if it's the same with Ewing and McClung. Plus, Wilkins essentially returned home during the pandemic which is understandable.

I've been trying to get some numbers on waivers in college hoops. The AP put out some stats that seemed VERY low (& dated), so I'm ignoring that. There was also a good article in The Athletic by Dana O'Neil in December 2019 breaking down the disaster of transfer waivers.

From the Athletic article:
Last year, the NCAA's 10 full-time staff members considered 294 transfer waivers (down from 341 the year before). Of those 294 cases, 52 were referred on appeal to the Committee for Legislative Relief, a seven-person panel of athletic administrators/volunteers who have the final say.

I assume this is the total for football, baseball, ice hockey, and men's and women's basketball... The sports that do not allow for a one-time transfer exception.

So maybe the AP data wasn't terrible... Supposed to be just for men's basketball.

2014-15
— 73 waiver requests.
— 53 approved, 60%.

2015-16
— 27 waiver requests.
— 14 approved, 52%.

2016-17
— 21 waiver requests.
— 15 approved, 71%.

2017-18
— 30 waiver requests.
— 24 approved, 80%.

2018-19
— 79 waiver requests
— 44 approved, 56%.

12 guidelines for a waiver... Most commonly used:
*Mental health issues
*Egregious behavior on behalf of the former school or coach
*Being run off or essentially denied a sport on the roster

After digging into this topic... It is a fucking mess.

So are we actually in the lead for any transfers? I guess maybe only Jalen Johnson?

We need a big. Maybe we luck into Williamson and Johnson. But we really need a big if we are going to cut down nets this season

To get an impact big at this point, have to hope someone shows up out of nowhere. A late entry to the the transfer portal or something like that needs to happen.

Jalen and Daivien would be solid, especially if Daivien is a better candidate for a waiver. I still might like Mac for sitting one and then joining (I'd def take Mac if both were immediately eligible and it was a choice between), but I don't know. Guess we just need bodies. So Polish dude is out, Gabe Wiz is not reclassing -- it's down to that Mo Njie and some Aussies or something?

Wake is about half the distance but yeah still not close enough to help in asking for a waiver. ETSU, App State, UNC-A are all closer.

I see some Ish in Daivian's game

Not as fast/explosive as Ish, but much better percentages. I think he can play off the ball better, what little I saw. Ish is one of the better athletes we've ever had, I think. I don't think I totally realized at the time it wasn't just speed, he's just a beast all around.
