Wake Baseball 2020

No more Deacs drafted.

Unselfishly, does this mean Chris and Bobby come back? Because if they have to come to school another year and have another year of baseball where money isn’t being made because of the virus that would be awful. I really feel for those guys.

Not being the Friday night guy had as much to do with wanting to go RHP-LHP-RHP as it did with skill.

Also, depending on how the next 7-8 months play out, there's something like a 10-20% chance Cusick is a first-rounder too. Walter has made it pretty clear he thinks he's got the best "stuff" of anybody who's pitched at Wake in the last 10 years.

Cusick is even better

Bobby was clear with what he told me last week: "I’m definitely not going to take that free-agent signing."

Chris is different (also from last week): "I don’t have a definite answer right now, but after the draft I would discuss it with my advisor and just weight out the options. I mean, it’ll be a tough decision because I really do want to play minor league baseball, but it’s not a huge payday and I always have my education to fall back on. So, I mean, that’s the only thing. That’s what will make it tough. ... I’ve really, really been hoping for it (to get drafted), but if a day comes where I have to make a decision … I don’t have a pinpoint answer."

Interesting. My bet is that since Bobby is coming back, Chris will too. Could be wrong there. I have to say, if both come back, that’s a big get for Tom Walter. College baseball is going to be more talented than ever before. I expect to see some high quality baseball at The Couch next year. So I guess that’s a positive out of all of this.

At 22, Lanzilli is old for a junior in college. MLB is generally less patient with older players. Can understand why Lanzilli may feel he needs to sign now, even though he is very likely to get a much bigger bonus if he waits until the 2021 draft.

Also, WF's top HS recruit, C Jackson Miller, was drafted by the Reds in the 2nd round. It's expected that he will sign.

According to his bio on Wake's website, he turns 22 next Thursday. I doubt that age has much of anything to do with his decision.

Which means he will turn 23 this time next year. Which is, old by baseball standards.

Not too sure he would get a bigger bonus next year. This year, had he gotten drafted, he had some leverage in that he could return to school. Next year, all the leverage belongs to the team that drafted him. Typically seniors get drafted rather late.

Ok, sure. That’s really just saying that college senior signees are old, because turning 23 around the time of your graduation isn’t that abnormal.

What’s the point of signing now anyways? There isn’t even minor league baseball to play in currently. So he’s going to be 23 (or close to it) by the time he starts playing professionally either way.

Chris Lanzilla was named one of ten unsigned players to keep an eye on in MLB.com today. Areas of concern are how well his power will translate on off speed breaking pitches using a wooden bat, his speed and his defense. Good power and a good arm.

Boston Herald saying Lanzilli is coming back to Wake.

https://www.bostonherald.com/2020/0...draft-chris-lanzilli-ponders-baseball-future/

Key quotes:

“I’m going to get my education rather than take an amount of money that is not worth it. I weighed out the options and it just makes more sense to go back to school,” Lanzilli said Friday. “I think it’s more figuring out life rather than baseball and getting my degree and finding out what I want to do.”

“Teams have tried, but every team is saying the same thing, that they only have a certain amount, so there is not much convincing,” said Lanzilli.

Really interesting, because a few months ago, I’d bet a lot that both him and Bobby would’ve said, baseball first and education second. Normally you’d think, hey, that’s probably not the appropriate order of importance. But these guys are so good at both (especially baseball) that it makes sense.

So disappointed for them, but glad they are deciding to come back to college and stick with Wake. It makes the most sense now.

Braves sign Deac Jared Shuster. Slot value for the pick was just over $2.7 million; Shuster signed for $2.1 million

I'd be curious to see if the Braves put Shuster on the taxi squad for this year. A college pitcher generally has the fastest time to go through the minors to make the big leagues (especially if he breaks in as a reliever); with no minor league season this year, it would at least allow him to have some organized workouts.

Possible. There is also talk of an early instructional league where all teams can send their prospects to train and gain experience. The problem is that that the two most likely locales, FL and AZ, are not exactly great places to be right now.

Kinda non-Wake, but Nats signed 2nd round pick at over slot value because Miami U had offered a full scholarship.

Agree. I figure for their taxi squad players, the Braves will use their AAA ballpark in Gwinnett. One of the rules is that the taxi squad has to train at a place close enough that it doesn't require someone taking a flight, so I'm guessing if clubs have a minor league affiliate near them (nearly every team does), they'll just park them there.

Shuster makes it on the Braves 60 man roster, so I'd expect him to end up in Gwinnett on the taxi squad.

Other Deacs invited to the 60 man player pools:

Parker Dunshee - A's
Stuart Fairchild - Reds
Will Craig - Pirates

Of that group, Craig has the best chance to get game action.
Griffin Roberts was not included in the Cardinals 60 man player pool, and the White Sox (Gavin Sheets) 60 man pool is not currently available.
