Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

Trump will be forgotten after his loss. It is a good example of the nativist movement and evangelical movement rising since 2010 and finding a vessel who is social media.

Since 2010? Since the 1970s.

Right forgot how tough Reagan Bush Dole Bush 43 McCain and Romney were on immigration.

If Trump loses (and IF he vacates the White House peacefully), he will command an incredible media megaphone and his dumb ass followers will hang on his every word. Anyone who wants to be nominated from the right will try to get his stamp of approval for the foreseeable future.

After losing and coming up on 80 don't see it.

Like democrats and gore? We he can run a crappy unwatchable channel and hope he can sell to al jezzera

You missed on the nativism pretty badly, huh?

No. Not at all. US immigration policy is nativist in general. That's why families of US citizens get preferences. That's why it's easier to immigration from European countries than from Africa and South America.

Racism has been the core belief of the GOP since the 60s. The religious right gained a foothold in the 1970s as Republicans looked for wedge "morality" issues as gateway issues into denying Black Americans the promise of the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, and Reconstruction.

Even if he mercifully drops dead soon, it will take a serious purging to remove the fascism from the party now that they have gotten a taste of it.

Dude at this point fuck the gop and this supportive bullshit of a fascist fuckhead. At this point all that matters is we get rid of trump, then let’s talk about all other policy. Fuck this.

End of hot take.

Reconstruction in from the 1860s and 1870s. Republicans headed that.

Immigration policy was radically different. You are just wrong.

Denier has on meaning in politics and it has to do with the holocaust.

Climate change is real. Human or not, I don't know. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be wrong so I assume it is.

Then what’s your beef with Gore?

Wouldn't run on Clinton policies. Sleazy deal with directv. Privileged and arrogant.

^This. The base won't stop adoring him just because he lost. He'll still be the dominant figure in the party even if he loses, and he'll continue to tweet and speak incessantly and attack anyone - Republicans included - who try to criticize him. Fox News, OAN, and other right-wing media outlets will continue to beg to interview him, knowing that he'll increase their ratings and website hits. He'll still have plenty of Republicans lining up for his endorsement in the primaries. As for the Gore comparison, there is none, because Gore never had anything like the adoration and intense emotional support and blind cult following that Trump now has. If Trump does lose the election (by no means a given), it's going to be entertaining watching some Republicans try to come out and criticize him, only to be badgered back into silence by their own base.

Yep

Trump didn’t take over the GOP as much as walk into the role they created for him by decades of embracing and employing lying, fear mongering, race-bating, nonsensical oversimplifications, etc. Trump has merely accelerated many well established trends.

The party won’t recover anything close to decency or respectability without him anytime soon.
