Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

He's probably too busy working on those indictments of Hillary and Obama and Biden to worry about fine Real Americans defending their rights by trying to kidnap and silence a wicked, un-American, far-left terrorist governor with a vagina. Hasn't Dear Leader attacked her frequently? Barr's gotta complete his crusade to rid America of godless socialist liberal scum before the election!

That's one hell of an interview with the sheriff. When white militia guys are arrested, it's all "Well have to look at Code 435.2345c-def" because it's legal to arrest the governor. And it's "innocent until proven guilty."

I did get a kick out of the reporter saying that rally was "last May." Nope. That was 5 months ago. 2020 is a hell of a drug.

Most of the time I just blow off my fellow south carolinians as just dumb rednecks but lately its way beyond that. The no masks and not caring about others is really pissing me off and its all around me. If you go anywhere that you "know" idiot rednecks are likely to be like an HVAC store, there is not a mask to be seen and they want to talk about why you shouldn't wear one.

A local restaurant is suing the Governor for making masks mandatory in restaurants. Get a load of this bullshit:

We went to HHI in June and were shocked at how bad it was. It was the same weekend as the first PGA event where one of the golfers called HHI a “shit show”.

If there is one good thing trump has done it's saying the quiet part out loud. Magats and the gop have followed suit showing their true colors. Maybe it ultimately is the undoing of this iteration of the gop. Probably not.

The end of last night's Letters from an American from Heather Cox Richardson addresses this.

In all of this—except the Russia part—Trump looks oddly like President Andrew Johnson, who took over the White House after Abraham Lincoln’s death at the hands of an assassin. Johnson was a former Democrat, and could not stand the idea of the Republican government ending systemic Black enslavement and leveling the playing field among races. He wanted to reclaim the nation for white men. Convinced he was defending America from a mob and that his supporters must retake control of the government in the midterm election of 1866 or the nation was finished, Johnson became increasingly unhinged until he began to compare himself to both the martyred Lincoln and Jesus Christ. He called his congressional opponents traitors who should be executed.

Egged on by the president, white supremacist gangs attacked Black Americans and their white allies, convincing Johnson that his party would sweep the midterms and he would gain control of the government to end Black rights.

Voters heard Johnson, all right. They were horrified by his attacks on the government and the violence he urged. It was an era in which only white men could vote, but even so, they elected to office not Johnson’s white supremacists, but Johnson’s opponents. And they didn’t just elect enough of those reasonable men to control Congress… voters gave them a supermajority.

If Trump loses, the floodgates should open up.
