the official new supreme court thread - Very political

Justice Ginsburg with her characteristic pithiness used this to describe how a nominee should comport herself at a hearing. No hints, no previews, no forecasts. That had been the practice of nominees before her. But everybody calls it the Ginsburg rule because she stated it so concisely.

Are you illiterate?

RBG plainly and clearly said she believed in the woman’s right to choose. Barrett wouldn’t even acknowledge that climate change is real or that the President can’t unilaterally change the date of the election.

Cute; I do love when Dems lose; they just lash out and bite anything in their path.

48 year old Amy Coney Barrett will be on the Supreme Court for at least the next 30-35 years.

Get over it.

But I thought you agreed that the GOP should have waited until after the election to do so, and that you were "concerned" about her possible rulings on social and cultural issues, as you said you were a liberal on those things. But now you're rubbing it in that she'll be on the Court for "30 to 35 years." What the GOP did in deliberately appointing such a young justice and the process they used to do it is clearly a change from the way it has been handled previously, and your comment above basically proves that this is simply a partisan power grab. And yet you wonder why Democrats are seriously considering expanding the Court if they get a Senate majority?

Any moment now, He’ll post an apology to the Mods in District 13 for mis-reading justice Ginsburg’s comments.

I love how Republicans have praised RBG and gone through the motions of talking about what an important and groundbreaking justice she was, and yet they're busily ramming through a nominee who will do her damn best to undo and oppose and overturn pretty much everything that she stood for. And then they wonder (or claim they wonder) why Democrats are so concerned about them getting a sixth hard-right justice onto the Court.

Yes I did and stand by those remarks. But I also stated that I felt the process was constitutional and ACB is a more than “qualified” jurist. Remember, I am a Republican with many Republican values though I cringe at what the Party has morphed into with a leader like Dump. Equally, I’m tired of the the mockery that even the Committee minority leader apologize for that drove her own family out of the meeting room. I guess that’s what become of politics in 2020 but I don’t have to like it.
And let’s include the condescending name calling on this thread.
Illiterate. Trump Supporter. Shitty Conservative. Legal Expert.
It’s a democracy people; we are all entitled to our opinions or didn’t they teach that at Wake?
Maybe I should ask for my money back.

Sheldon Whitehouse’s breakdown from yesterday explains this well.

All Republicans talk about is getting judges who will overturn Roe v. Wade. But they get made at Dem senators who say that’s what Barrett will do.

You are entitled to your opinion. No ones says differently. I did hope you won't use your shitty opinions to ever vote again, but it is your right to do so in whatever contradictory and hypocritical reasons you come up with.

Sorry, but it's hard to say that "Hey, you stupid Dems, we've got a justice who will be on the Court for 30 to 35 years, so suck it!" and then complain when Democrats respond that they may expand the Court in response to what you've just admitted is a blatant partisan power grab, which is not what the Framers intended for the judicial nominating process, nor is that how it was handled until recently. And to appoint deliberately young SC justices who will stay on the Court for decades means that Democrats will have no way to resolve the issue for decades themselves, which justifies expanding the Court, as they will likely not be able to get a majority of liberals on the Court for several more decades - which is also not the way this process has worked until recently. And spare the mockery claim - McConnell spent time in his recent debate with his Democratic opponent in KY giggling and smirking when she mentioned Trump's failures with the pandemic, and the GOP are masters of mockery. Again, relatively few people are knocking her resume, it's her opinions and beliefs and prior judicial decisions that are being criticized, and justly so. One can argue that Scalia was qualified, but that doesn't mean he was a good SC justice, certainly not for minorities and on cultural and social issues. She's a far-right justice, imo, and will almost certainly be that way on the Court.

Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and now Barrett are justices nominated by a president who didn't win the popular vote and confirmed by Senators who represent less than 50% of the population. They represent a party whose politicians have the racial and gender composition of voters 100 years ago with the goal of undoing the progress of the last 100 years.

Please clarify.
These politicians were voted in by 62,980,160 Americans who voted Republican in the 2016 election.
I’m not sure where you are going with this.

Not sure what I need to clarify. 62,980,160 Americans voted for Trump. Significantly more than that voted for Hillary.

Grift. Explosive deficits. Whataboutism. Greed. Guns. Anti immigration. Hypocrisy. Love all people like me. Everyone else is scary (did I mention I need MOAR guns?) and coming for my job. Don't forget anti-science, anti-expert, anti-public education, anti-acknowledgement of systemic racism, and anti-globalism.

What needs to be clarified? You’re a Republican with Republican values. You know your party.
