Official Election Month Thread: COUP falls short, nothing to see here

I agree it's not all in the naming. I also think (regardless of your personal beliefs or anybody else on here who is an abolitionist) that you'd admit that "at the very least" wanting "to defund the police" isn't one of the big ideas that, as a mainstream platform for the Democrats, would have increased the likelihood that Biden wins this election. Could it have helped in some select House or Senate races? I'd argue no but I think there's more of an argument there in some specific states at least.

right, I don't disagree with any of this

but I do stand by my point that moving away from actually defunding the police and actual socialist policies will have consequences with far left voters

I'm not making a judgement on whether or not that's the right move -- but I am making the judgement that it is really fucking hard to find a political home in a mainstream political party in a two-party system

It may not be as catchy as "defund the police" but "reallocate some portions of police funding to social workers and specially trained mental health professionals" is probably a better broad policy position that could play well with the majority of Democrats.

"care not cops" is a slogan that gets at this

idk seems like democratic politics is quite literally eliding the voice of masses in the streets

i just don't think that should be ignored

I agree that we shouldn't ignore the masses in the streets. So whose voices do we ignore then? We've got to ignore somebody and the remaining people need to show up and win elections. It's a delicate balancing act unless some portion of the Democratic Party can come up with an strong message to overwhelm what's happening on the right.

Help me out with Arizona. This link is saying "Trump is averaging 58.5%" and "Trump needs 57.55%."

Should we be worried?

AP doubled down on their call as did Fox News.

Sure agreed. Also this ties into the "what the fuck Massachusetts" re: ranked choice voting.

Official Election Month Thread

These arguments never go anywhere because a 2 party system isn’t enough, and the Republican Party will never ever split, so the Democratic Party will never split. It’s a stalemate that completely fucks anyone on the fringes, including the black people getting killed by the police, and the people using gofundme to pay for their kids cancer treatment. In this country you can either be born disadvantaged or become disadvantaged, and either way you better shut the fuck up about it, lest you upset someone.

Probably better for the chat thread. But there are plenty of progressive ideas that are both good policy and extremely popular. Run on those instead of the unpopular ones *shrug*

Agreed. Problem is with a big tent everyone wants their voice/fav cause etc heard. Elizabeth Warren had a plan for everything. I like that. Everyone should. The gop just runs on a few small ideas - often not even actual policies just thoughts- and that message cuts through the confusion. That helps ring in and keep low info voters.

It feels like everything could still just fall apart resulting in a super-narrow Trump EC win.

God help us.

I wish Democrats, the whole big tent, could just find some simple shit we agree on and run on that. $15 minimum wage is a good one. Universal health care is a good one. Agree on that and stop arguing about specifics. Get shit done then make sure people know you did the shit.

At the pace of catch so far today, once 230,250 more votes are counted in PA, Biden will catch Trump. So far I've seen 65,000 and change get counted and Biden has netted 25K and change.

ETA - 85-90K in Philly and 340,000 left in PA generally. 35-36K in Allegheny county. If Biden takes 80% of Philly at 85K he will cut Trump's lead down by 51K. He'll be within 40K then.

Yea there’s gonna be constant infighting on whether Bernie would have been down ballot poison to moderate states and Biden neolib poison to milquetoast down ballot candidates so just pick a simple progressive platform and run unproblematic figures.

Yep.

IMO, there also needs to be a big push to educate folks wrt civics, basic governing, etc. I mean, when any good shit you can do is immediately branded a "government takeover" or some similarly stupid shit, you need to counter this effectively.

GOP gutted school spending and the neoliberal shift to encourage STEM above all is finishing the job
