Non-Political Coronavirus Thread

My 14 year old daughter tested positive today. Almost certainly got it at school. Really hope it’s not because the school nurse decided to go on a Caribbean vacation over thanksgiving week.

Sorry Bird, hope she gets thru it ok.

Thanks all for your supportive comments and messages. So far she is asymptomatic, but we decided to have her tested because 3 kids in the 8th grade at her school turned up positive last week. It's been 7 days since her last possible exposure so she will probably weather this just fine at this point...but now I am reviewing every little thing in my head worried that maybe I have it too...I coughed a few time yesterday morning, or my back has been sore in the last week, or I went for a jog and was really winded afterward...all of which normally would be explained away by alergies, or getting older or cold air, but now I am paranoid that I've actually got it.

And Scooter, I'll give snark to whoever I want to. My kid brought the virus home after I've been ordering groceries online, working from home, not visiting my parents, etc. for 8 months because someone else thought the virus was not a big deal, or they thought they were being careful enough and only taking worthwhile risks over thanksgiving week. School nurse or not, someone gave my kid this virus because they were being selfish. Now her 85 year old Grandfather with congestive heart failure has been exposed, but that turkey tasted good and they wore a mask in the airport so it was totally worth it!

Planes themselves are more safe than one would expect due to their air filtration systems, assuming:

The plane doesn’t sit on the tarmac for very long (they generally don’t run their full filtration system when not in the air)
No one within a few rows of you has the virus
No one with the virus takes their mask off to eat or drink
No one with the virus uses the bathroom immediately before you

In any event, the flight itself isn’t the most risky part of a trip. It’s the baggage check lines, security check lines, sitting around at the gate, boarding/deplaning lines, and baggage claim that are the problem.

And, of course, all of this ignores the possibility that you are the problem, making it unsafe for others in the plane, in the airport, and at your destination. I only mention this last because it doesn’t seem to concern you.

So flying is like going to a grocery store filled with mask wearing people. Cool.

Yes the CCP selfishly operating and continuing to operate wet markets are responsible.

There’s no use reasoning with this. One of these is an essential thing to do to keep you alive. The other is not. Long flights have been shown to be super spreader events too. And traveling internationally and only spending 30 min at the airport?

Damn TIL townie doesn’t realize the USVI is not international. YIKES

Oh cool, we are going with the the Trump China virus chain of blame. That slaps!

I mean it’s been known for a long time that wet markets could lead to coronavirus outbreaks, see SARs. But the CCP allows it anyways, and stills does.

You a science denier now?

The lefts fawning government the CCP is concerning.

I mean it’s their fault y’all even have to deal with me as a poster tbh.

Maybe they seemed like worthwhile risks to the people living in Wuhan. They took precautions, followed some guidelines, but you can't shut down a whole sector of the economy just because some people in American nursing homes might die!

I hope your daughter and all of your family stay healthy

it's quite possible that your daughter caught Covid from some kid whose family all wear masks, and just happened to share some air in a grocery store with the wrong person (who potentially was *also* trying to be diligent but just got unlucky)

Ok sure, that's possible. But I still reserve the right to be snarky to people who are traveling in airplanes for shits giggles in the middle of a deadly pandemic.

“Quite possible” is a really ambitious phrase for the very remote possibility you just laid out.

This is heartbreaking for me...

catamount's contributions to this thread are so wholly incoherent as to not be worth your time

yes, I supplied a very specific example to cover a range of similar possibilities

My point is that if both people are wearing masks (being careful and taking precautions, as you said) then there is an extremely low chance of transmission just from passing someone in the grocery store. Your example was more broadly about people being careful and sharing a space for a short period of time (as one would in a store). That situation is a very very low risk situation.

Yeah, that person would be you. You sent her to school in the middle of a pandemic that you've been screaming at the sky about for months, right? This is the perfect example of the WFHElite mentality. Bitch at and look down on everyone else for not taking precautions and being "selfish", when your risk assessment was the proximate cause of her catching it you dumb motherfucker. If I send my kids to school during this time, which I have, and they get it, that is my fault, not anybody else's. You are just as guilty as the guy running around with no mask, you are just more of a sucker because you fell for the media okeydokes about masks, despite extoling on a daily basis all the evidence to the contrary of exploding cases despite mask requirements for months. On top of that, you are paranoid that you have a virus that apparently has given you no symptoms beyond what would otherwise be caused by cold air. You can't make this shit up.

God damn you people are awful. This is as bad as the dumbass on here a few months who went to a brewery and then complained about people not wearing masks at said brewery. The only people who have a right to complain about others are those who have legit locked themselves in their house for 9 months and still managed to contract it from the Beefaroni cans that WalMart dropped off outside their door after they soaked them in Lysol for 3 hours. Everyone else is on a sliding scale, on which they all think they are on the high side, and can stfu. Unless you are completely off the scale then you are part of the problem.
