Unpopular opinions

Nothing smoother than a brand new cart at a recently opened grocery store.

reminds me of the episode where jerry puts on the rainbow suspenders and runs out to VO "who's ready to laugh!?" so he can tank

The sitcoms of the last 10 years are trash. Trying WAAAAYYYY too hard. Schitt's Creek, IASIP, Brooklyn 99, etc. Give me the multi-camera, laugh track sitcoms of the 70s and 80s every damn time.

oh hell yes you're in the right place with that steaming take

The laugh track sitcoms of today are not as good as the laugh track sitcoms of the 70s and 80s, but the ones you listed are pretty much better than any comedic show from those decades.

In googling "best Sitcom's of the 80's" what shows up are:

Growing Pains
The Facts of Life
Family Ties
Punky Brewster
Night Court
Silver Spoons
Perfect Strangers
WKRP in Cincinnati

I remember watching a good bit of those, but I generally have a terrible memory, but I'm imagining most of them would be completely unwatchtable today. I'd guess Night Court, Family Ties and WKRP in Cincinnati (which I don't remember at all but I assume the rest of the choices would be god awful) would be the best of the three, but I might be biased because my boss at one point was a writer for Night Court.

I haven't watched any sitcoms from the 70s or 80s but what does "trying to hard" mean?

The 70's seem to fare a bit better than the 80's

Good Times
Happy Days
Welcome Back Kotter
All in the Family
Brady Bunch
Sanford and Son
MASH

M*A*S*H is better than any comedy of 21st century. Their stories even hold up.

Soap was better as well. Without All in the Family, sitcoms couldn't address issues like they do.

Agree with dd. Scorching take. Well done.

I doubt many of those 80s sitcoms hold up.

I guess if you’re from that era, but the jokes aren’t that funny. I actually agree about All in the Family. That the working class retrograde father Al was sexist and racist was a great mechanism to explore social issues. Cheers is fine but doesn’t hold up either.

You can appreciate game changing tv or movies even when they don't hold up late4 because culture changes.

Having said that I have not gone back to revisit those shows from my youth (and before).
