Totally Unofficial 2021/22 Premier League Thread (NWT)

I believe in a variation of this where the super league doesn't happen, but rich clubs get a big $$$ concession out of these governing bodies to stay the current course

Yeah this seems most likely. There is a fine line between playing hard ball and pissing off your fan base though. I'm not sure these 12 clubs expected such push back from their own fan base, both domestic and international. Then again, they know most of their international fans wouldn't choose a club outside of the top tier of their leagues, so I guess little threat there.

Uhh why? It's their tournament, they make the rules. If that's the case then why can't Gareth Bale just choose to play for America if Wales never makes the world cup?

If it's their rules then what's to stop them from just banning players from any club team "just because". At least as far as the rhetoric goes, the players right now are just pawns in the game. Will be interesting to see if any players demand transfers from these 12 clubs for whatever reason.

If the EPL caves, then the EPL is dead. You're playing for one "European" spot in a closed league where you will be astronomically outspent even if you qualify? The Scab 6 don't have to try domestically because their qualification spots are guaranteed? If that happens, I'm fucking out, and I'll go to bed every night hoping that everyone coward associated with the league dies a miserable, lonely death.

The only honorable thing to do at this point is to throw these smug bastards out and recreate the league in a better image. I honestly won't miss the six that are gone, and I'll still enjoying watching Everton, Leiciester, Villa, Leeds, West Ham, Wolves, etc. If you let these fuckers back in they'll just keep asking for more concessions and power. Because that's what they are, giant black holes of greed and self interest. The Scab 6 are not football clubs, just soulless corporations.

Cutting the fucking cord and let them go. The CL knockout stages are generally boring as hell already, these 12 clubs are greatly overestimating how much interest there is to see these clubs play each 2-4x/season.

I'm obviously not an expert in European laws, but it seems to me that FIFA attempting to ban individual players from participating in a (World Cup) tournament because of the decisions of the teams from whom they draw their regular paychecks will fail.

You have to be a registered FIFA player to play in FIFA competitions. FIFA has to recognize this new league or its players will not be eligible for FIFA competitions.

That being said I have no doubt that somebody will sufficiently bribe Infantino and he'll allow them to play.

oh i don't know about this

pretty sure the interest is there

but also the solution (forcing the best teams into a separate league) seems like it might normalize those big dog matchups too

so the interest that's there now (dudes who mainline fifa and follow Neymar on insta) is gonna get cheapened by the move imo

but i could be wrong

On the one hand, the ESL destroys everything I love about the game. On the other hand, the ESL is the ultimate spark for non stop rage posting from Brasky. Tough call.

unironically think that not having the clubs in the next fifa game is gonna cause some voiced anxiety on behalf of the younger fans who don't give a shit about the historical/political/economic critiques of league realignment

Yeah I agree, that’s what I meant. After a season or two the shine is going to be gone.

I assume the eventual goal is to turn it into the NBA model where the games don’t actually matter and it’s about creating personalities and making gifs. The league will focus on 3-5 athletes, their personal lives, and the teams and tradition will be irrelevant.

I bet EPL caves. Their TV contracts are up for negotiation soon. They'd lose billions without those 6 clubs. No wonder the ESL announcement came now.

I think the goal is to remove themselves from domestic leagues altogether and create a Europe League with 30 clubs or so. Stop playing in domestic tournaments or against small market teams that offer little revenue and instead have every match televised across the world. Would be a huge financial win for those clubs, just not sure they have the power to pull it off given the World Cup/Euro Cup being run by Uefa.

yeah, the average Joe is not signing up for the EPL package with Leicester City and Everton as the headliners

So assume everyone caves, who gets the invites to expand to say 24. Bayern, Dortmund, PSG obviously. Then 9 more...

Sevilla
Valencia
Lyon
Monaco
Roma
Schalke
Leipzig
Ajax
Everton

?

Edited to add: that already feels more watered down than what I imagine they’re aiming for

all these scorched Earth statements from UEFA, domestic leagues, etc had to have been planned well in advance. this new league has been rumored forever and all of the sudden everyone's acting like it's a total surprise.

I may be wrong but I think the six EPL teams (I don't know enough about the other domestic leagues to have an opinion about them) have massively overplayed their hands. The reaction has been overwhelmingly negative from nearly everyone. At the end of the day the supporters that fill those stadiums every match value the system - it's not nearly the same institution without it. They're throwing away their loyal customers to attract casual fans. That doesn't sound like a sound strategy.

Or maybe I'm just so used to caring about the teams I support I can't understand the fan that simply wants to attach themselves to a perceived "winner". Who knows.

This is fascinating to watch.

No, I don't know why they'd want Tottenham. They aren't an elite club, have never been an elite club, nor do I realistically see them ever becoming an elite club.

If we are picking London clubs with a new stadium to fill some sort of pretend quota then just pluck West Ham after Arsenal and Chelsea. That's at least a proper club with a fantastic history. Tottenham is just.... It's Tottenham, lads.

I hear West Ham and I think Bobby Moore.
I hear Tottenham and I think Jurgen Klinnsman. Or Harry Kane. Or Gareth Bale. Or that Argentine that had a name that sounded like a fish you would catch if you chartered a deep sea fishing boat. AS I think were the initials. Anyway, his name is fishy as fuck.

Neither has won anything of note this god damn century (league cup doesn't count), so tie goes to the captain of the only English team to win an international tournament.

Sol Campbell was a Spur, and he won a Championship at White Hall Lane.

All those teams provide 10x more revenue than matches against Getafe, Sheffield, Benevento, etc. They'll want as many major markets in Europe covered for tv viewers. Teams owned by investors who want to build their profits. Germany could be tough given the ownership setup but they'll find a way to make it work. Bayern + Dortmund. Sporting Lisbon or Porto, a team or two from Russia, Ukraine. I imagine those teams would then pick off tons of other teams supporters who want to follow the "best" league. Certainly the international fans. I dont think this will work as they presented but I see it as a step toward this end goal. Remove the dead weight and make more money.
