Totally Unofficial 2021/22 Premier League Thread (NWT)

So assume everyone caves, who gets the invites to expand to say 24. Bayern, Dortmund, PSG obviously. Then 9 more...

Sevilla
Valencia
Lyon
Monaco
Roma
Schalke
Leipzig
Ajax
Everton

?

Edited to add: that already feels more watered down than what I imagine they’re aiming for

not Super enough

As said last night. Here's their longer term Euro blue print. This has to be layered in with the UK markets and also has to take into account any clubs that punch above their weight in terms of market, stadium and revenues (e.g. - Green Bay Packers in the USofA for American football).

The truth is if they are going for a bigger longer term gambit they must get Germany and France in the fold. And even longer term you could see this being a global play.

ETA - Here's a global list for markets they'd want to consider. Use the 2014 column and sort by size.

Based on current revenue base they'd have:

Atletico (are they already in?)
Roma
Everton
Ajax
for sure.

I suspect a couple of other EPL clubs might make that cut too - like probably West Ham. But at some point in time they probably are considering other factors like new cities and the market in which they exist - have to imagine they'd want more from Germany and France.

If they are taking into account revenue potential they are going after several markets in Germany and a few in France (Marseille).

Atletico is in.

Gotta go with Monaco -- they'd have 100% of a whole country's fanbase!

All 40K of them.

Wonder how these 12 teams collectively respond to the massive blowback. I've yet to read anyone who is in support of this idea other than a few statements from some of the clubs themselves - Real, Juve and ManU.

Article suggesting Chelsea and City don't need the money from the new league because they have no debt, but believed if they did not join they'd be left behind and so they caved. This suggests Man City's only statement so far included a quote from ManU's owner. Only thing I've seen Glazer say is something along the lines of bringing the best to play every week will somehow result in more money for the broader football pyramid, which doesn't make any sense.

Would be interesting if Chelsea, City or some other clubs changed their minds and backed out. Tottenham, ManU, Barca, Juve and Real are the clubs in the 12 with the largest debt to revenue ratios.

City and Chelsea are the ones responsible for this. It is their influx of cash into the EPL that triggered the need for more money just to compete.

UEFA may expel the 12 teams from present Euro competitions as soon as Friday. So ManU, Arsenal, Chelsea and City all get booted.

Also the EPL has a rule that teams can only play in defined list of already sanctioned competitions. So signing up for the ESL violates the EPL's rules. And the EPL is meeting this week without the six breakaway teams. They might get expelled from the EPL.

Long before they arrived other clubs were on top of the financial heap and the same relative issue existed. Prior to Roman other teams were on top financially and shutting out others on the same basis. Life is relative. I get that its been almost two decades since Arsenal were an annual threat to win the league. But Chelsea and City didn't make the Glazers lever their club or Levy lever his. Those were their own decisions.

Read Chelsea will get 200-300M just for signing the binding agreement to form the ESL. Presume that's the same for all of the others. And speculation is TV rights could be double what the CL presently obtains - so around 4B / 20 = 200M a year. Also read the league is going to have broader revenue sharing among member teams and put in place rules designed to enhance competitive balance (I presume that means some sort of "soft" cap with a luxury tax like MLB has).

This would completely obliterate what is already an insanely lopsided game financially for most clubs. Not sure why the EPL or any other big league would let teams signed up for this play in their competition. This is obviously designed to destroy UEFA and it could turn what are considered big domestic leagues into something more like the Dutch first division.

The corporate umbrella for all of this is in Spain, not sure what advantages that may hold.

Basically sounds like they are taking the North American pro sports model and applying it to football.
