2021 Carolina Panthers Thread - Time for the 2022 thread

Would have been happy with Farley or Darrisaw here if the Panthers traded with Chicago.

Not every person drafted would have been one of our 16 first round choices - Jones and Fields, for example. We could have dropped back to 20 comfortably.

16 first round grades doesn't mean they had all 16 rated the same.

The Patriots are so smart. They could tell by the way the draft was going they could maybe still get Jones at 15. And as each pick went by it became clearer he was going to fall. Once it got to the Panthers they knew they wouldn’t have to jump that far up and give up so much. Worst case they jump a few spots and give up much less. They had it in the holster the whole time. Damn they are smart and lucky.

Can’t edit. The downside is the Panthers had to do the same thing at 8 they were going to do at 15. And they didn’t get any extra picks either. But they still drafted for need and cornerbacks seem to be a position that is one of the least difficult to predict the level of NFL player they will be. In looking at the way things went, I don’t see anyone except maybe Slater that would have made sense for them potentially at 8. But that would also have been a reach and they surely felt they could get someone in the next couple rounds closer to Slater in talent than Horn. Unless they went for someone outside their draft needs like Devonta Smith.

The rest of the draft will be interesting. Maybe the Panthers will try to add picks down there.

I think Horn is a good CB but taking him at 8 is a huge reach when you need offensive help for your new QB. Have a feeling they will take a TE or a WR in the 2nd

Official 2021 Carolina Panthers - 1st round CB Jaycee Horn

Could be extra salt in the wound if Asante Samuel Jr is around in the 2nd, or the Notre Dame LB (assuming we don’t go defense in the 2nd).

I’m really hoping they have their eyes on a dark horse OT.

We have to get Darnold some OL to chase away the ghosts

Still haven't taken an offensive player since 2019. We let the heisman trophy winner and a top QB pass us by. Hope it doesn't bite us in the ass, because if it does it'll be the lasting memory of every single person in that draft room. And that's coming from a Gamecock who loves Jaycee.

There are some good players available at the start of this second round. Panthers pick seventh.

Teven Jenkins, OT, Oklahoma State

Elijah Moore, WR, Ole Miss

Rondale Moore, WR, Purdue

Terrace Marshall Jr., WR, LSU

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB/S, Notre Dame

Azeez Ojulari, EDGE, Georgia

Either of the Moore WRs would be a reasonable replacement for Samuel, but both are only 5'9". Marshall is a bigger dude at 6'3".

Hoping that Carlos "Boogie" Basham is available for us in rd 3 after we draft OT in rd 2.

It seems like there are plenty of good OL prospects left. Jenkins in the 2nd would be awesome, but Eichenberg, Radunz and Mayfield all appear to be good options. I like Brevin Jordan, TE from Miami, in the 3rd.

I know Guitar said that a trade with Chicago wasn't in the cards, but I still wonder if we would have done it for the two firsts and a second, and then Gettleman intentionally undercut us with the two firsts and a fourth to put it that much further out of the question. He strikes me as petty and arrogant enough to do it.

Also got to be a kick to Darnold's gut that the Jets finally traded up to grab an O-lineman while we drafted our 56418 straight defensive player.

They liked Leatherwood and they like Freiermuth the Penn State tight end the most of the tight ends. Besides Pitts obviously. I know that much. I think they were really hoping and expecting - and that seems even more obvious now because they clearly were going to take Horn at 8 or 15 - to have the extra 2nd round pick. So who knows now - not me that’s for sure.

Looking back at mocks, I didn't see Horn dropping past 12. I agree with that CBS Sports write-up. Horn needs to be an elite CB right away. The first seven picks worked out for us if someone was willing to trade up for Fields. But no one was so it didn't work out well. If Fields or Slater are any good and Darnold and our LT pick isn't, we're going to be talking about this for many years.

Justin Fields is a first round ballot bust of a QB. Bears set themselves back with that pick.

Mac Jones is hot garbage.

Yeah, this was not a huge reach for the best CB in the draft. I dn't understand why anyone would downgrade a team's draft because they didn't draft a quarterback they didn't covet, to either compete with a guy they clearly want to be The Man, or sit on the bench.

The only other player I would have been excited about at #8 was Slater and guitardeac says the team didn't rate him that highly, so what do I know ?
