WFU Hoops: '21-'22 Roster Construction Thread: +LaRavia/Taylor/Walton/Monsanto/Williams/Sy/Marsh

So how many are still in the portal and who do you all think or hope Forbes and staff are targeting?

Yeah. Aside from obviously great players who win, there's nobody Wake fans love more than the lightly recruited guy who tries hard and overachieves. Ody would have been beloved after four years.

One thing we're really losing with all the transfers is the four-year athlete who is always treated like a hero when he comes back to campus. Now it's just a bunch of forgettable guys.

Yep

The trend is a net negative for college sports, IMO.

maybe he left because of the coaching change, and didn't appreciate this tweet from the fan base

Not the best quote from Ody, but I don’t see where he said anything bad about Wake.

I guess you could say it was implied, but he also could just be talking about what he’d like to see at his next stop.

Whatever. He gone.

It is pretty easy to say it is implied when reading the quote.

Ody can be not wrong about the fans and the fan base can simultaneously be totally justified in lacking enthusiasm after 10 seasons of total irrelevance.

“Cultural aspect” means to me that Wake may not be a place Ody feels comfortable

Seems like that has been the case for a lot of kids over the years

What a bitch move and bitch excuse.

Also, you're not supposed to be comfortable at age 19 or whatever. You're supposed to learn how to succeed in uncomfortable situations; it's how you become successful in the real world. I know I sound old as shit, but good lord. How "uncomfortable" can it be? Wake is a giant safe space compared to many other major-conference schools, both for students and athletes.

I don't feel the need to break Ody down after his decision. He is young and wants a change and was given the opportunity in this free-agent college year.

however, i am not sure he will not be given a better opportunity for minutes or starting in the ACC or any other large conference. i loved his never ending motor and scrappiness. he needs to work on his low post defense and spend a lot of time on his low post offensive moves, in which he really didn't show that he had any. i hope he finds a place to help him in these endeavors.

i wish him the best and hope he finds what he is looking for out of his college experience.

It’s a giant safe space if you’re part of the homogeneous majority group. But since it is such a small school, if you are not PFT of that majority group it can be pretty hard to find your crowd compared to a big state school.

you don't sound old, you sound out of touch with the race and class realities of Wake Forest and how it may be tough on some kids, especially those who may have committed to a certain set of coaches who are no longer there

I think the adult tweeting back to him is the bitch here.

I wish Ody were staying. I’m not going to hyper analyze every word he says on his way out the door.

I enjoyed my time at WF. I also sent two kids to college and didn’t really seriously consider WF. They had great experiences elsewhere. Hope Ody finds a good spot. Hope Forbes brings in more talent.

Plenty of other schools have a LOT of fans that really care about the program. Really care, as in obsessed with the performances of 18-22 year olds and college sports.

I care, but if LaRavia is forced to play center, when he is more of a stretch 4, and we go 12-16 next year, I am not going to lose my mind. I am on the 5+ year plan with Forbes.

There are other variables that fall into that "culture" nonsense, but mainly I would say we truly focus on academics - which is a damn good thing.

WakeLaw isn't wrong here regardless if what you say is true. In reality, we don't know all of his reasons for leaving Wake but it sounds like a basketball culture thing and not "race and class realities" culture thing.

could be

but also wouldn't be the first to leave because of the overall school culture

When I was at Wake, it seemed the basketball players were the most popular people on campus. I think Wake was a great place for a student-athlete because they were actually able to be somewhat normal students. They could go get lunch without someone being starstruck that they ran into a basketball player. We also won and so there was a lot of support for the program.

I can relate to him not feeling like he fits in at Wake though. I certainly didn't fit the typical Wake profile but I found groups that I was comfortable with and did fine. Still, it probably wasn't the best social fit for me. Student and fan apathy was at an all-time low when he came to campus and nobody cares if you're a basketball player when your team only wins 6 games. So while there are certainly some demographic/cultural challenges that are unique to a school like Wake with a small enrollment and more homogeneous population, a lot of this boils down to us being a losing program. Start winning games and you'll feel much more supported by everyone.

I don't agree with ever tweeting athletes directly in a negative way.

That said, I agree with the content of the tweet. It's just a REALLY bad look for grown men to call out student athletes for transferring, or for anything for that matter.

Also that said, the Ody transfer bothers me more than Sarr, Chaundee, or any basketball/football transfers for that matter. Only KW3 is on the same level of slap in the face as Ody leaving. KW3 had ZERO P5 offers out of HS and we developed him into a star. Ody wasn't and won't be a star but it's a similar scenario.
