Only 55% can read it. That is extraordinary when you think about it. I would say less than 20% of people can read English. Yet, mix the letters around and, boom, literate. Perhaps I can read The Master and Margarita in its original language if I just move the letters around.

Getting kind of addicted to the NYT crossword but at least my times are decreasing. The rebus thing threw me off on the app since I had the extra letters entered and in order to complete the puzzle I guess you have to leave the square with only one letter.

Gonna get an Au Pair from Columbia or Japan. Thoughts/Experiences?

Generally, I'm thinking pros from Columbia: Spanish immersion opportunity, appreciative of my home environment. Pros from Japan: significant cultural exposure, older (24-6) candidates means more mature to handle taking care of 4 kids.

Cons from Columbia: ?

Japan there's the culture shock element to consider and the language barrier is almost certainly going to be harder. It exists for someone from Columbia, but I really don't think either con is going to be as harsh.

I think I've got Japan on the menu because I'm semi-nostalgic for my study abroad experience. That's p dumb, honestly.

my brother and SIL have an au pair -- she's pretty meh in my opinion, but the au pair setup works well for them

my take is that chemistry with the family is top priority -- I'd interview as many candidates as you are willing to and go with your instincts on the individual

Just make every day a holiday and let people pick and choose a certain number they take off. Then I wouldn't have to worry about the liquor store being closed and all.

There are 10 national holidays, not including Juneteenth:

New Years Day
MLK Day
Washington's BDay (Prez Day)
Memorial Day
ID4
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving
Xmas

I say keep them all and rename Columbus Day. Prez Day is sort of lame.
