Covid-19 - Treatments & Vaccines

COVID wins again.

COVID is going to do a lot of winning in the next few weeks. Our hospital system numbers are going up incredibly fast. Had a low of 6 hospitalized COVID patients back in June. We hit 100 yesterday and are now at 115 today. 6 kids. Wear a mask indoors for the next several weeks.

Just got a notification of a positive COVID test at my kid’s elementary school. Second day of school.

It's really weird that half of the country wants a hotter world with more viruses and guns.

I mean, how hard would it be for a Republican to agree to help stop climate change, side with the CDC on the virus, and be against guns, all while still being fiscally and socially conservative.

Impossible. “Fiscal conservative” has just been a front for greed and hate.

Conspiracy theories, quack remedies, and resistance to expert, professional advice and knowledge has been ingrained in many Americans since the 1800s, but the explosion of social media over the last quarter-century has made it all much, much worse. Far too many people now think they're an expert on every subject, and they're able to easily get in touch with other quack "experts" and spread BS all over the net. And far too many gullible people just eat it up. In fact, not only do many people think they're experts on everything, they think they know more than the actual experts who have been trained in their field and practiced it for years, maybe decades.

My mom is visiting, she's vaxxed but has a close friend who's not and my mom definitely gets her fair share of the fox news. She doesn't seem to buy into climate change. "Fires have been happening for years!" When I asked what ever happened to not trusting science her reply was "well now they just use a bunch of algorithms, and its garbage in garbage out"

Fairly difficult to counter that

NY Times article written by a scientific group that worked with North Carolina public and charter schools for a year regarding covid prevention measures discuss their findings after studying one million schoolkids and school staff. Their conclusion:

"For more than a year, we’ve worked with North Carolina school districts and charter schools, studying the rate of new Covid cases, the efficacy of mitigation measures such as masking and the increased risks of participating in school-sponsored sports. We have learned a few things for certain: Although vaccination is the best way to prevent Covid-19, universal masking is a close second, and with masking in place, in-school learning is safe and more effective than remote instruction, regardless of community rates of infection.

Vaccination is the strongest method for preventing the ill effects of Covid, but students under 12 years of age are ineligible for the vaccines. Masking, then, is one of the best, most readily available methods to protect them from the disease, with universal masking being one of the most effective and efficient strategies for preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission in schools...Universal masking in schools can save lives. Voluntary masking in schools will likely be much less effective and could lead to school closures and community transmission. This summer, we’ve seen that voluntary masking has failed in some schools in Missouri and North Carolina, which saw increases in Covid-19 cases and days missed because of quarantines, prompting several districts to reinstate mask mandates.

With the evidence now clear that universal masking is linked to lower spread, why not require universal masking? Why seek to gather hundreds of unvaccinated, unmasked individuals in an enclosed space for several hours a day, five days a week? Schools that do not require masks will have more coronavirus transmission. And while mortality from Covid was only two per 100,000 school-age children as of April, with more than 50 million public school children in the United States, that could still mean many avoidable deaths of children in a year."

So mandatory masking usually works and keeps schools open, voluntary masking does not. Too bad so many red states are opposed to mandatory masking and preventing school districts from making it mandatory.

Dumbass conservatives bitched about teachers unions keeping schools closed but also bitch about schools trying to put rules in place so they can be open.

I can see where you got your trolling skills.

They want to keep schools open regardless of spread. They don’t care about children.

New high score for Angus, but with bonus points for 50% less susceptible people, quite the achievement.

Not entirely sure why this is the case though

Though deaths are rising in Florida, the average of 122 deaths per day is still short of the over 200 reported over the winter, and is far eclipsed by the almost 1,000 daily deaths recorded in New York in Spring 2020.

I can think of some reasons that would mitigate he deaths (some hospitalized are vaccinated, better treatments, etc.) but not to have the death rate be 10x less than NY. Or is it just "give it 2 weeks"

although my first mitigating factor isn't likely it

Officials say the influx is almost entirely made up of unvaccinated people.

Probably this one, mostly, combined with the fact that more of these hospitalizations are of younger people. Also, deaths usually lag hospitalizations by a bit, so give it some time.

Letters in today’s W-SJ…

What’s really happening
According to the writer of the Aug. 4 letter “COVID blame,” the real people responsible for the COVID delta variant surge are unregistered voters.

According to the writer of the Aug. 7 letter “A different take,” it’s the fault of the Biden administration.

According to columnist Cal Thomas (“Rose is a rose; let’s call it what it is — an invasion,” Aug. 5), it’s illegal immigrants.

In the meantime, every day on TV and in the paper we encounter actual Republican officials, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and North Carolina’s own Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who are rejecting safety measures and insisting on exposing their populace to the virus. We watch Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz run around the country telling their followers not to be vaccinated. We also read about countless Republicans who reject the vaccines and tell us why.

It’s not hard to see what’s really happening and it’s not hard to see who’s lying about it.

Republicans want all the freedom and none of the responsibility that comes with it. They’re lying themselves into the grave.

Protecting our children
Protecting our children from the delta variant of COVID-19 is considered “optional” at several Piedmont school systems.

Thankfully, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will demonstrate concern for the health of children, community, teachers and staff with a mask mandate and, one hopes, a vaccine mandate for eligible students and employees.

Here’s a time-saving suggestion for anyone who had planned to protest the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board’s infringement on your freedom: Petition to enroll your child in the Davidson, Stokes, Yadkin or other county schools. Your conviction that masking is harmful or unnecessary is obviously so strong that you are willing to bet the health of your child on that proposition.

True, you’ll have a bit of a drive to protect your freedoms, since those government-sponsored buses don’t run everywhere. (Careful of those stop signs — others may think they are optional. And be ready with your religious objections when the trooper pulls you over for not wearing a seatbelt.)

But the time you save by not protesting to our schools can be spent planning for remote schooling when, within weeks, the “optional” schools close because of outbreaks decimating staff or threatening the lives of your children.

Be prepared, though. Should your loved ones end up at a tragically crowded hospital, you will be required to wear a mask, if you’re allowed to visit.

I assume it’s because old people are vaccinated, so they’re not dying. Young, unvaccinated people are being admitted, but they die at a lower rate than older people.
