Covid-19 - Treatments & Vaccines

Mask optional school boards should reconsider, says infectious diseases expert [WFU ID MD].

…“I would mandate (masking indoors), which could happen actually, so keep an eye on that,” Ohl said. “We need to go back to masking for our kids.

“For those school systems where masks are optional, I feel very strongly that those school boards should reconsider that decision.

“Otherwise, you’re not going to get through two to three weeks of school. It’s not going to be possible,” Ohl said.

Ohl said there will be enough students exposed to COVID-19 in mask optional settings — “whether home transmission, community transmission, hopefully not in-school transmission but it could happen — that contract tracing won’t be able to be kept up.”

“When that happens, the only thing left is to either close a grade or close the school, depending on how widespread it is.”

Ohl said parents whose children will attend a mask-optional school should emphasize to them the importance of wearing a mask anyway...

I like this perspective from a Tennessee mom. Schools throughout the south, maybe all over, have long had dress codes restricting the length of skirt, requiring sleeves, restricting hats…mostly pushed by conservative parents who don’t want young women’s bodies luring boys into unholy thoughts or deeds. Now many of these same people are showing up at school board meetings screaming about masks restricting freedom.

Mississippi's hospital system is on the verge of failure - "A surge in coronavirus patients and a shortage of health-care workers and intensive care unit beds have pushed Mississippi's hospital system to the brink of "failure," state health officials warned Wednesday, saying drastic federal intervention was needed to help the state grapple with the thousands of new daily infections that have overwhelmed doctors and nurses." Good luck getting a red state like Mississippi to ask for federal intervention.

Thank you for your input and good luck to your daughter at her new school.

Mississippi has asked for federal aid. A parking garage at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is being turned into a field hospital, and the Center has asked the federal government to send healthcare professionals to work there. Bad situation in Mississippi right now.

Speaking of disinformation...

This is how things are working these days. In the beginning the guidance was everyone avoid social gatherings and wear masks this prevents transmission. Normal people accept this because we live in a society, rubes reject this and refuse the guidance. You can easily tell who a rube is and social pressure is applied for compliance, see r/publicfreakouts.

Vaccine comes along and guidance remains the same, need to hit a societal threshold. Mask guidance and distancing recommendations finally loosened, probably later than they should be, for those that are vaccinated, not unvaccinated. The unvaccinated rubes didn’t care either way, can’t tell the difference anymore no more pressure, like societal leeches they take advantage of everyone else’s responsible actions.

Delta variant comes along, vaccinated fairly well protected, rubes just absolutely crushed. Mask mandates and distancing measures back in place because the rubes ruined it, so vaccinated need it, probably not, but easier to say universal so that societal pressure comes back, you can tell who is a rube and who isn’t, see school board meetings. Additional added pressure, fuck the unvaccinated because now masks are back.

Overall the US follow the science now comes with the caveat that our society is dumb as shit factor that needs to be worked into the equation. Like vaccinated breakthrough case with same viral load as unvaccinated would almost certainly mean symptomatic infection so it’s not like an asymptomatic low viral load vaccinated individual needs to worry about spread.

How is requiring an ID to vote racist, but requiring an ID plus a vaccination card to eat and go to the gym not racist.

Spoiler. Neither of them are.

It's the access to ID/vaccines that can be argued to be racist.

3 Broward County teachers and one assistant teacher all die from covid within one day of each other. 3 of the educators were unvaccinated, unsure of the fourth.

"The teachers, ironically, all died around the same time Broward County’s School Board voted to defy Gov. DeSantis’ order to drop the mask mandate. Despite the dangers, the governor is sticking to his guns." Schools reopening this year is certainly going swell!

Part of why I tend to think universal masking when indoors around others probably should have been the advice all along. Regardless of vaccination status.

But the cdc seems to have been trying to use evidence and to show benefits of vaccination (unmask!—most everyone happily decided to regardless of vaccination status).

Then along comes delta…

As in Mississippi, Tennessee is facing a crisis of hospitals overwhelmed with covid patients.

Piece I read said they hadn’t been in/at school…so probably will get worse.

Adults working in schools should be vaccinated.
