2021 Wake Forest Football Season

I'm not liking this at all. A wounded FSU team that has been underperforming is hungry for a W comes to town. If we win, we only do what Jacksonville State has already done. If we lose, the narrative becomes "Wake can't even beat a down FSU team." Should we win, FSU fires their coach, promotes an assistant with a goofy name like Dabo, and FSU is back on the path to national prominence. I don't see much upside here.

Well, we have to play the game, so....

Being a wake fan, it's hard to get overconfident, but we are a better team than them, we are better coached, we are more disciplined, we are at home, they're in a downward spiral and we are trying to go from "good to great".

We will win by 2 scores.

Why didn't I know we have 36 walkons.

The increased number of walk-ons is one of the positive developments under Clawson. The more walk-ons, the greater the likelihood one of them is the next Nick Andersen.

Also, the bigger and better the walk-on group, the better the scout team. And the scout team team needs fewer (maybe no) guys from the two deep and special teams players.

If Wake's staff is smart, a few of these guys have been practicing the triple option already. It takes practice to get the timing down like Army and Navy .

It’s been mentioned before. I think in a Clawson interview a month or so ago he said there were something like 120 players on the team and mentioned a lot more walk ons, and better quality walk ons as well. As Deaconblue said, this is a very good sign. We’ve actually had a couple of walk ons become team captains in the past few years. Develop these guys and anything can happen.

One Issue I haven't seen discussed is who on the coaching staff is responsible for teaching the scout teams the opponents offense and defense?

I would think the better the scout teams mimic the opponent, the better the preparation.

This would be most important when the opponent's offens is very different from Wake's (like what Army does). However, nobody runs Wake's slow mesh RPO, sooo....portent every week.

Definitely this game. And not to mention we had a ridiculous amount of injuries that year. I want to say we only had a few scholarship linebackers for that game and earlier in the year didn't we only have one vs FSU or something. We were ravaged by injuries that year. Still can't believe we managed to win 7 games that season due to the injuries and our embarrassing defense to start the season.

If we win this game, the pundits will explain that FSU is having a bad year. Also if we win, it will destroy FSU's season. They won't recover. If we lose, the pundits will say FSU is "back," but I don't think it will adversely affect the way we play the rest of the year.

This may be the most important game of Clawson's tenure.

Maybe, maybe not. It is, however, the most important game in Norvell's tenure at FSU. A loss and FSU is 0-3 with losses to Wake and a not-so-good FCS team. He's dead meat, the only thing saving him being the amount of the buyout. If Wake wins it will be perceived by most that FSU just sucks. Next week at UVa then becomes Clawson's most important game.

If FSU loses this game, there's pretty much almost no way they make a bowl, unless a miracle happens.

FSU remaining schedule:

at Wake
Louisville
Syracuse
at UNC-CH
UMass
at Clemson
at NCSU
Miami
BC
Florida

It's hard to find six wins in that remaining schedule, especially if Wake isn't one of them.

I'll pick them to beat Lville, Cuse, UNCCH, UMass, NCSU, BC.

Yeah, if they lose to us, I can see them rebounding against Louisville and Cuse at home. 2-3 after 5 games.

Even if they beat us, 6 wins seems hard. They'd have to pick up 2 wins out of:

@ UNC
@ State
Miami
BC

They beat UMass and sit at 3-4

Then two losses to Clemson and NC State have the players give up on the season. They have a chance to beat Miami or BC at home (the latter more likely, but would still be an upset), but I think by that point, they're done

Final prediction (if we beat them): 3-9

I'm really looking forward to getting past this game so we can fret about beating UVa after they crush UNC.

If FSU loses to us, there is no telling who their new coach will win or lose to after that.

There is really nothing quite like college football to focus a fan base as the BIG game on a Saturday.
And excitement around a game you're supposed to win against a nationally recognized program truly puts a new spin on things.

Wake is on a collision course with Clemson for hegemony in the division.
