Official 2021 College Football Thread: Grass Picker Named to CFP Selection Committee!

Or, create a draft situation similar to the NFL which, while it would require a sea change at the college and player level, it would still be up to the school and player to determine if it is a bad fit and if it is then trade. Trading would limit the ability of the dominant powers to control the landscape. If the SEC continues to drain from others, then The Alliance could always create an entirely different and separate model which is better for the schools and the players and the spectators.

This might be the most insane college athletics idea I've ever seen. You're going to tell an 18 year old kid from Florida that he has to attend college in Nebraska instead of Florida just because that's where the draft sent him? And if he doesn't want to go live in Nebraska for 3+ years, he can try to convince Nebraska to trade him?

CFB is moving towards more player empowerment, not less.

Beamer's frustration really tells the tale: Having perennial powers that get all the best recruits is an almost impossible situation for the rest.

If you want to create a chance for real parity then allow programs to extend eligibility based on whether the player is in school with some outside maximum of years (4 years undergraduate + 4 years for med school/graduate programs to doctorate level). With the advent of NIL, schools may as well empower the players to keep working at football if they want to play longer while staying in school. This idea has its disadvantages but over time it would undermine the dominance of a few.

With NIL, bigger changes should at least be considered.

Thinking outside the box is good but no one should play football while enrolled in med school.

As for Beamer, I have little sympathy; what did he think he was signing up for?

Yep. He chose to coach at SC.

We see upsets all the time in college football with bigger gaps in HS rankings than UGA and SC. It’s not just talent even if UGA has some of the best talent.

Not a great week of games:

Thursday night:
Marshall at App State -7

Friday night:
Wake at UVA -4

Saturday:
The only games between ranked opponents are:
Notre Dame #12 v Wisc #18 (-5.5) at Soldier Field 12:00
A&M #7 at Arkansas #16 (+5.5) 3:30

Of interest is:
Clemson #9 at NC State (+10) 3:30 - I fully expect Clemson to look like a playoff team in this game, or lose 9-7.
Louisville at FSU (+2.5)
WVU at OU (-16.5) 7:30 - WVU gets little respect for beating Va Tech.

He's upset with the dumb question. Georgia's defense didn't beat Carolina with scheme, they just beat them.

Maybe, but on the flip side, until further notice the Clemson program remains in championship or bust mode, so an early loss (or two?) could take the wind out of their sails later in the season.

Linked is the current "bottom 25" teams in CFB: https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-rankings-arizona-continues-sinking-as-new-no-1-team-emerges-in-the-bottom-25/

Four "Power V" schools who have sunk to that level

- #19 FSU
- #18 Vandy (they play UGA this week)
- #12 Arizona (they lost Northern Arizona on Saturday)
- #9 Kansas (they play Duke this weekend)

Note that Coastal Carolina either has played or will play five teams on that bottom 25 list, plus the Citadel, who would be in the running for the bottom 25 BCS teams; that is six guaranteed non-competitive games before the season even starts. The combined record of the teams that Coastal has beaten so far this year is 2-7, and the two wins for those teams were against North Greenville (not kidding) and Wagner. Oh, this week Coastal plays 0-3 UMASS... next week, Coastal plays bottom 25 ULM. I like the teal turf as much as anyone, but Coastal Carolina has done nothing to deserve a national ranking.

As much as I hate Carolina, their throwback uniforms are top notch.

I’m feeling an NC State win tomorrow followed by a 5 year extension for Doeren. It is the way.

Cuse beat Liberty on a last-second FG 24-21.
