ESPN Q&A w/ Coach Bz

Those knuckleheads played 26% of the minutes on the court last season. Add Walker and it goes up to 36%. Bz didn't have to play that much if they were hurting the team.

Let's just see how it plays out, as far as I'm concerned by the statements (excuses) he's made, he's hung himself if we see the same crap on the court we did last year.

It wouldn't take much for Bz to name some names and talk about how hard CJ and McKie have been working in the offseason and how they're the leaders of this team. Or how Carson is developing as a big man or how he's looking forward to seeing what his freshmen can do.

Jeff [Redacted] (8:59 AM)
What I did learn from last year is to never again spend 90 percent of my time with 10 percent of the players for as long as I endured without moving forward in the right way.

this quote is already driving me nuts. he has said it in each preseason interview he has done. he really needs to drop it.

a little advice bzz, if you did not know this after your long, mediocre college coaching career, it does not bode well for wake forest. how in the world did you think it was a good idea to spend most of your time getting through to the knuckle heads at the expense of the good kids that wanted to work hard. you do that and you risk losing the attention and interest of the guys that want to be a part of the team. you also risk having the worst team in major conference basketball history...

If Ty were to be kicked off the team, would he lose his scholarship and not receive a degree?

Who cares if he casually bashes players. Grobe does it all the time. Those guys clearly were major problems well beyond what most of us even know. We basically had 2 different teams last year, the ones who wanted to work hard and learn and the renegades.

Look at the 2 players who represented us Tuesday at ACC Media Day and tell me that they dont buy into what Coach [Redacted] and Company are trying to accomplish. You dont think if Travis had a problem with him he couldn't transfer to 95% of the schools in this country?

It's like pruning a tree. You get rid of the weeds, and healthy plants can grow.

Skip quoted Thoreau.

Bz doesn't even know the correct definition of pruning.

damn straight. after the worst season in wake history and the worst in major college basketball history, the fan base really needs to be re-energized. we need something to get excited about. reading the excuses about why last year sucked won't do it. it will just keep the depression going. he needs to be talking about how excited he is about the players he has. no veiled bs about maturity and how its better now. he needs to talk about how hard the team is working and specifics about what they are working on and the small and large successes he is seeing.

Who said they're not buying it, what I'm saying is that according to [Redacted], he's gotten rid of the problem children and can now work his coaching magic. If we see a solid team this season great, if we see the crap we saw last year, [Redacted] has some explaining to do. I don't think I've heard Grobe waste any breath bashing players who are no longer on his team.

Many people said this about JTT as recently as April/May. Lots of it came about when Ari transferred. In fact, people pointed to JT as somebody that bought into Buzz's system in complete contrast to Ari not buying into the system.

Whoops.

I've never seen a coach blame everything on the players like Bzz does. Now he's blaming lack of success on the fact he spent too much time on a couple of knuckleheads. Shouldn't a head coach at this level know that already?

It all might be true and maybe that's a good thing, I don't know, but it seems odd. Part of me likes the fact he calls them out, but part of me just cringes about it worried that this can't be a good thing.

Of course he isn't afraid. It's his built in excuse for the season.

This was in response to the question:
"How frustrating was last season and how challenging is it to try and change the culture of a team to get the talent to shine through?"

His answer was "we kicked off some players". Not a good answer.

This is 1 of the things that bugs me the most about Bz. Yes, he took over a bad situation that got worse and worse. But he is the HC and takes no responsibility for our situation. I was never a Dino fan (though I consistently have maintained we fired him a year early from a PR perspective). And as time goes on, and from what I've read on the boards, it sounds like Dino wasn't in total control of his program. And while I certainly wouldn't hold Bz responsible for each of the mind numbingly stupid offcourt incidents that have occurred over the last 14 months, I will note that we didn't see any of these type of offcourt incidents by the same players under Dino. Do I think Dino had the respect of his team? No, not really.

But Bz clearly isn't in control of his team either. Off the court we've had a domestic A&B, a DUI, an academic probation and a stealing incident of some sort where 1 of the possible participants is still on the team (not sure what really went down with that 1). And on the court last year, I saw a team that lacked consistent motivation and played worse team D than any Paul Westhead team I ever saw. I can't help but conclude that this is a coach who doesn't have the respect of his players and is only too quick to throw them under the bus for our predicament. The only coach in our hoops history who was close to being this much of an embarrassment was Staak.

I like the spend 90% of my time with 10% of the knuckleheads thing, and how he still actually talks about them 90% of the time

And those people were clearly wrong. There is/was obviously a ton going on none of us had a clue about regarding JTT. Maybe he had a major substance abuse problem, maybe he just couldnt take playing for this coaching staff anymore. Either way, he isn't here anymore. But Travis is and that to me is a great indication of his commitment to this coaching staff and program.

Thats the thing though. Everyone keeps asking him about last year. I agree he needs to move on, like we all do. I imagine you wont hear much about those players once this season starts.

disagree that "everyone" keeps asking about it. also he can diffuse those questions by moving on. he has not. he better soon.

also, great point about the 90/10/(still spending)90

I'm puzzled why no one asks him about his conference road record. Example: Coach, in 4 years of major conference basketball (3 at Colorado and 1 at Wake), your teams have complied a 2-32 road record with ~20 of those games being blow outs. To what do you attribute that performance?

Best post of the thread. Grobe busts some balls to the press to motivate, but he always talks up guys. Buzz has nothing to talk up. He is too concerned with saving his ass (which is a lost cause).
