2021 Wake Forest Football Season

The WF godeacs website gives drive charts for every game.

Right. In the box scores. That's why I asked if there's a site that consolidates them for the season. One place with every drive in every game.

Yeah I think Clawson himself said at some point that he didn't really have the leg for it while he was an underclassman. I think that he does now, but obviously we still haven't seen it in games. I hope he gets some opportunities from out there, because if he can prove that he's reliable out there too then he's going to be an NFL kicker.

He's going to have to prove he handle kickoffs at that level, too.

Sciba has shown for a while in practices (2019 fall camp included) that he can hit 50-plus, and not just 50-52. He can hit between 55-58, not sure I've ever seen him get a 60.

Part of the problem, as Ph notes, is Wake just doesn't seem to ever get a 4th-and-long from the right area of the field. Clawson's analytics chart usually dictates going for fourth downs in that area of the field.

maybe I'm off, but I do seem to remember Clawson not sending him out for some longer FGs during his record-setting streak

but as blue said, that was two years ago

It looks like his career long is 47 yards and he has never attempted a kick over 50.

yeah and as an NFL kicker he'd have the benefit of kicking in more domes but also in worse conditions than Wake usually plays in

which, actually, what was the last non-Carrier Dome dome we played in? I don't think we've ever had a bowl in one.

That's the question. Is there any website that consolidates drive charts for the season?

I just dug through the drive charts for all 6 games this season and here's the interesting ones I found:

1- Score: 17-3 Wake over UVA. Yard line: UVA 37. 4th and 1. Choice was to go for it, converted via a penalty.

2- Score: 35-14 Wake over FSU. Yard line: FSU 40. 4th and 1. Choice was to go for it, was not converted.

3- Score: 21-3 Wake over ODU. Yard line: ODU 39. 4th and 3. Choice was to punt (downed at the 8).

4- Score: 31-9 Wake over Norfolk State. Yard line: NSU 37. 4th and 6. Choice was to go for it, was converted via Hartman rush.

5- Score: 21-17 Syracuse over Wake. Yard line: SYR 33. 4th and 1. Choice was to go for it, was converted via Hartman pass. This drive ends in a shorter FG on a 4th and 20.

That's all the potential FG situations shorter than a 58 yard FG in the 6 games this season. So Clawson chose to go for it on a couple of potential 54 yard FGs, both in games in which Wake was winning handily. Suggests that maybe Clawson is not willing to let Sciba try from that far out, but it's a small sample size. There was also a 50 yarder passed on, but it was 4th and 1 in a game we were down 4 in the second half, so that likely had little to do with Sciba.

To note: Wake Forest goes back 8 yards from the LOS on PAT/FGs. Just about the entire football community goes back 7; WF goes back 8.

That's interesting. Why? Has that always been the case with Clawson?

I can't remember if Clawson did it at Bowling Green, it's been a couple of years since this was explained to me.

IIRC, the explanation was basically: Wake's OL is, on average, smaller than most, so move back an extra yard to make sure the blocking can hold up and the kick can get past the line.

I mean I don't remember the last FG we had blocked, so I guess it works.

My post still is informative, just add a yard to all those FG distances. #s 1, 4 and 5 are the only interesting ones, as I don't think anyone is expecting Sciba to be hitting 57+ yard FGs. Of those three, the only one that seems to tell me anything interesting is #4, but it was against Norfolk State in a game where the points didn't really matter, so it could be as simple as Clawson wanting to get in-game 4th and medium reps.

I wonder if we had only gotten a handful of yards on that 3rd and 23 from the 44 if he would've kicked it.

If the LOS was the 40, that is a 57 yard kick. I think Clawson would have either gone for it or punted. Now if Wake had gotten 10 or more yards, but less than 21, IMHO, Clawson would have gone kick. If Wake had only 1 or 2 or maybe 3 yards for a first down, I think Clawson goes for it.

Because it's fun to feed the ogboards outrage machine, here is a quote from Mack Brown about Wake's success this year:

“The fact that Wake is undefeated at this point shows everybody that there’s hope and everybody’s got a chance,” said North Carolina coach Mack Brown, whose squad hosts Wake Forest in a non-conference meeting on Nov. 6.

Mack Brown is still stuck in the 90's and thinks Wake Forest should always be the conference punching bag. That's probably why his 2nd tenure on-field results have sucked so far.

If there’s any best way to go 6-0 it’s staring right at rivalry games and trips to Clemson and BC to close out 12-0. Plenty of haters and bulletin board material.

I mean I'm not interpreting that quote wrong, correct? Mack is saying that Wake being undefeated at this point is a modern day miracle and somebody else will almost certainly catch up to them to win the ACC instead?
