2021 Football Coaching Carousel

Grobe is now 69. His last coaching stint was as the DC for the San Antonio Commanders in the AAF. He coached continuously from 1975 to 2013; took 3 years off, before he picked up the pieces at Baylor for a year in 2016, and then the brief stint in the AAF. He coached and recruited the best defense that WF likely will ever have,

Yeah - 5 guys from one recruiting class drafted into NFL- That doesn’t happen too often for MSD or many school for that matter. Even beyond those 5 guys (AC, Phonz, Arnoux, Chip Vaughn, and Thompson)- the next tier of guys were solid players that would start for most ACC teams (McClinic, Kevin Patterson, and Anthony Davis). Eric Berry would’ve also been an NFL player if he could’ve stayed in school.

Pretty hilarious that a guy is going to get $95MM primarily for poaching a star running back from…Wake Forest. We really are upendi g the college football landscape folks.

This team is undefeated with Curry at LB alone. That was a legendary defense.

If we had Curry for that UNC game, Howell might be on life support right now.

LB - It's been the biggest weakness for a few years now and its criticality steals from the DB and DL when it's missing speed and ability. If Masterson is a half step quicker overall this defense is already much better.

Dude hit like a freight train when he got to the ball carrier. That defense had it all. Unlimited swagger, mean streak and roamed sideline to sideline.

Wait, I thought Cam proved a while ago that our LBs have been a strength of our defense, actually?

Well, the VT rubes seem convinced they're getting Clawson. Just saw a RT of a Message Board Geniuses screenshot and went to their boards and they're trying to talk themselves into him, but say there's a lot of smoke. Which is dumb because I don't think any of us have seen anything other than Clawson's name being on all the VT coaching candidate list articles.

I have seen many try to compare the thought of getting Clawson to them hiring Mike Young for basketball. "Not the most attractive hire, but is working out so far". I personally dont see Clawson leaving for VT. Amongst other reasons, they cant raise money to save their lives and have some money issues. For as passionate of a fanbase that they have, they dont open up the wallets. Even UVA has a bigger recruiting budget the Hokies.

Clawson would be a great hire for Va Tech but Clawson could do much better than Va Tech if he leaves Wake.

Hope Clawson parlays their interest into further improvements for the Wake Forest football program.

If DC moves on- he can do a lot better than that hell hole that is Blacksburg

I still remember him about killing that guy from Baylor on the punt when we went there and beat Robert Griffin III

$9.5 mm a year is Dabo/Saban level money. Mel Tucker is a good coach but he hasn’t even sniffed the CFP.

He’s in his second year. Currently making $5.5M. Spartans were 2-5 in 2020. Maybe MSU should see how the next year or two go first…

Clawson and his family are obviously pretty happy at Wake. I think there are a few programs, and only a few programs, that could lure him. He's way too savvy to eliminate leverage by ruling out a move, so we're going to have to sweat out these scenarios on a regular basis as long as he's here. The only thing that worries me about Va Tech is that it's close to Winston and would keep him near family and in the southeast. But I really don't see Va Tech as a big step up if it's even a step up at all. But for the gift of ACC membership they'd be a non-entity from an athletics standpoint (although of course the same could be said about Wake).

Uninformed people think we will not do everything we can to keep Clawson. Also, there is an obvious unwritten rule about Intra-conference poaching of coaches. Not a good look by VT.

Yeah I think the only reason State was able to lure Tom O’Brien from BC is because he was hired at BC before they were an ACC member. One thing that I love about the ACC is that we don’t poach coaches intra-conference. Some amount of civility and institutional loyalty left!

That’s why I’ve been confused that it’s even a rumor. Maybe it’s just hokie fan wishful thinking.

Also - I guarantee you that the powers that be in our conference - meaning UVA, UNC, State, Clemson- would much rather have DC at Wake than VT. While TOB was a good coach at BC- they had their best season in 2007 after he had already left- he never sniffed the top 10 during his time there. Might be a scenario that it pays dividends for us to be LOWF little brother here
