2021-22 Wake Forest Basketball Season - 25-9 (13-7), KP#33

Not to pile on, but I’ve been vocal about Mucius for years and I’ll say again…if we want to have a decent season, he’s got to step up and give us 10-12 points a game with 6-8 rebounds and good defense. If he can’t do that, we should give Cam most of his minutes.

Also, losing Monsanto hurts. I think he would thrive in our offense, particularly without a dominant inside presence.

I'm surprised Tariq left now. Would have thought he would at least stay for one non-Covid year. He is technically a "freshman" for basketball eligibility. As an academic junior that might be tough to take. I don't know how badly his academics suffered with his bad Covid last year.

Apparently he doesn't want to wait behind the transfer Sr bigs. Even though Walton has been injured most years and missed multiple games. Marsh being in concussion protocol will put him well behind for a while. Playing time as backup big should be availble.

Got to see the Deacs up close finally this past weekend. Alondes and Daivien were fun to watch. West Carolina had some decent guards and they just destroyed them. 75% from the field, scored or assisted on almost 80% of our points. I was interested to see if in person Cam's game looked like it'd translate against ACC-level players, and I think it will. He's much quicker than I thought; he'll be a good one. I was a little disappointed that LaRavia seemed to struggle to find shots against that level of competition, at the same time he was extremely active - I counted more than the 6 steals he was credited with and a lot of those Alondes boards were really ones he controlled. He'll also be a solid player for us. If only those 4 guys were all coming back for another year, that'd be a hell of a core.

The not so good... Whitt's uptick in speed in strength seems fairly minor, although the talent is obvious. A little disappointed to see zero improvement in that borderline push-shot... Having Alondes for the year to give him another full year before likely taking the reins at point is huge for us having any shot at being relevant this year. I think he'll get there but glad we're not depending on him this year to start.

Our front court, to be honest, was pretty shockingly bad minus LaRavia. Mucius I can understand - he just looks hurried, he's forcing things, his shot release timing was wildly different even when he was warming up. Looks like he's really putting pressure on himself to lead and impact the game. Hopefully he'll figure it out over the next few games, but it was like he'd either go too fast or too slow, go too hard after a defensive recovery or way too soft. Just needs to find that middle ground.

Walton was baffling to me. If you told me he was having pain issues and took too many meds before the game I'd 100% believe it. That play where they brought it up the court and he just turned his back to the ball watching the weak side of the paint, completely spaced out, and only turned around after the layup was on the glass, only to goaltend it with a confused look on his face.... Woof. And that post up "move" against a much smaller defender to a quasi-fade away... They only had one dude over 6'6" and he only played 11 minutes. Yet Walton didn't score a point. And he was 5th on the team in rebounds. So that's not great. Hopefully he's just lost against guards and he'll hold his own against real big men. Maybe same with Sy who seemed to be good for some size, 5 fouls and a couple of putbacks. Which we need.

Should be an interesting season. Feels like Forbes did a great job of filling in gaps so we're not devoid of talent anywhere like we were at the 4 last year, but a lot of those gaps are pretty rough around the edges, or they're one year rentals, etc. LaRavia/Cam/Whitt is still a decent base layer though.

I’m here too. Like the dude for sure, but his play has not been good and he’s forcing everything.

I think Sy will be critical to our success this season. He's more than 5 fouls and some putbacks.

Sy is who Darius Leonard(the Bzzdelek superstar transfer) wanted to be.

Tariq looked out of shape.

That's just his body type. He never had an ACC body. If he was 4 inches taller his body type would be fine as a center, and if he was 50 pounds lighter and more athletic he'd be fine as a 4, but that just wasn't the case. He's way shorter than listed, shorter than Zay actually, so he's just not an ACC center. Wish the best for him as he's had such a bad run of luck and deserves a good break.

Long haul Covid, which we have been told Tariq had, can do quite a number on conditioning. It's quite possible Tariq hasn't fully recovered. And even more possible that he hasn't gotten his wind and conditioning back to where they need to be to play basketball.

Hope so. He was completely lost on multiple possessions, and he got abused on defense by a 6’6” guard playing as a forward. Fouling out in frustration against Western Carolina in 20 minutes, with only 2 field goals… He’s like a Darius Leonard who can rebound. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing in a bench guy.

Blowout only boosted us up to #102 in KP. Will need to win a game or two in Destin and beat Northwestern to move up significantly.

In Williamson's last 4 games for WFU, he's shooting a steamy 79% from behind the arc. 15 for 19.

That's... uh... decent.

I think Sy's health is going to be extremely important for this team. We saw the impact he can have yesterday both inside and on the perimeter. We also have seen that Dallas can struggle physically and when we played smaller with Jake at the 5 we couldn't rebound at all. The keys for me right now are Sy's health, Marsh's play, improving rebounding, and finding another consistent 3 point shooter besides Daivien.

LSU is beating the crap out of everyone they play they scare me.

Tariq looked out of shape.

Seems pretty obvious to me that given he had a serious dose of Covid-19, his lungs very probably have yet to recover....which unfortunately is common in many cases. And guessing laws protecting students privacy probably account for
the lack of info.

There’s been zero signs of a rift with Tariq...nothing negative at all.

I predict 11-3 going into 2022. Losses to L$U, VT, and loserville. Coming from where this team has been, I’ll take it.

I think we might be able to steal one of those if we shoot well.

WF's first opponent in next week's post-Thanksgiving tournament is Oregon State. After a magical run to end last season, the Beavers are struggling. The have lost 3 straight (favored in each game). Last night, the Beavers lost at home to Samford, who is a low-end SoCon team. Not good. WF needs to win against Oregon State on Friday, before playing LSU.

KP down to #98.

That ACC opener @ VT might be the toughest game on our conference schedule (depending on how good Duke really is). Glad we start off with it.
