2021 Football Coaching Carousel

What are Pry’s Virginia roots?

Going to be a fascinating rivalry between these two.

Went to HS in Virginia. First D1 coaching job was as a GA under Bud Foster at VT.

I'm not impressed with either hire.

From speaking with those at VT who would know, they absolutely offered Clawson the job and he turned them down.

Pry is from the Shenandoah Valley and played HS football there. I think Poindexter is from the Lynchburg area and obviously played at UVA. They sure had some nice Ds the last few years at PSU. Parsons and Oweh are having nice rookie years, and they'll have a few day 2 picks on D this year. But they both really need to recruit VA a whole lot better.

Nevada's coach is moving to a conference rival, Colorado State, who recently parted ways with former BC coach Steve Addazio. My buddy is (was) on the Nevada staff and is moving to CSU. The chances of me travelling for a game in Fort Collins are significantly higher than they were in Reno.

eh Reno has Lake Tahoe right next door, defs worth checking out.

Current openings:

FIU
Temple
Duke
Fresno St.
Nevada
Oregon

Here are the rumored candidates for the Oregon job:

Chip Kelly
Dave Arranda
Jeff Grimes (Baylor OC)
Brian Harsin (he apparently wanted the Washington job; his vax status is uncertain. If "uncertain" means no vax, that is a deal-breaker in the Pac-12)
Bill O'Brien
Kilani Sitake (BYU)
Justin Wilcox (Cal)

Auburn folks are not exactly excited about Brian Harsin after one season. A lot of people felt like the talent was there and somehow Malzahn was the only thing holding them back from being at the top of the SEC West again.

Probably not mentioned enough how nice it must be for Clawson to now coach at a school with good pay, good facilities, reasonable expectations, job security, basically total control of the programX and a community where he and his family aren’t under a microscope. Yeah it might be cool to have Virginia Techs home crowd 6 games a year, but otherwise…

Blowing the Iron Bowl probably also not helpful with the fanbase.

It's mentioned quite a lot on this board

Can't imagine having the ability to take a job you want that will pay you $Texas refusing because you would rather stay unvaccinated, I get he is making a lot of money at Auburn, but Washington is a better job in a area he is from. Just wild.

Yeah, we're now a football school, and VT and UVA are now hoops schools.

Pleaseeee let Duke hire Jason Garrett as their HC.

Seeing how as I have no clue which one of these guys is Poindexter, guess that puts me in the "not impressed" group.

C'mon man. Aren't you an older poster? You don't remember Poindexter from the 90s UVA teams? Dude was awesome.

is FULR Fuck U Lincoln Riley?

Winner winner, chicken dinner.

All pretty reasonable.

I could be wrong about Venables. Seems like a good dude, for sure.

But I think you are way off base on Riley. You make it seem like he was a horrible coach. 5 years at Oklahoma and a 55-10 record, 4 Big 12 Championships, two #1 overall QBs (in back to back years). The 1-3 record in bowls is really the only blemish I can see, but those were all CFP / New Year's Six bowls.

No, he isn't a bad coach, but he left the program in worse shape than he found it, and his teams were incrementally worse each year. This year would've been an unmitigated disaster if OU had had just a quarter of Nebraska's luck. He now has to build on his own, and he brought with him many of the same problems that he employed at OU. And for all his offensive brilliance, his schemes require an O-line that can do some unnecessarily complex maneuvering. They were most successful when his line was still big and strong and less affected by his S&C coach and how FULR actually wanted them S&Ced. Compare the line in Mayfield's last year or Kyler's year to what has been trotted out there the last 3 seasons. Hurts covered up a lot of deficiencies with his running. It hasn't been good and while I had blamed the OL coach for this, again, it's becoming clearer that this was a problem with both S&C and the offensive schemes employed getting figured out. It also should be said that it was also painfully obvious that FULR needed to have an OC to take something off his plate as a HC.

Yep. He was an All-American. He is in the college football HOF. Poindexter was one of the two UVA tacklers that brought Warrick Dunn down on the one yard line to give FSU its first loss in ACC History. Poindexter was a lock to be 1st round pick, and he blew out his knee during his senior year, which ruined his draft stock. Even so, the Ravens drafted him, and he was on the 2000 Ravens team that won it all. He is one of the best players in UVA history.
