2021 Football Coaching Carousel

Yeah, it's sounding like Elliott is the new coach here. And it's sounding like the process was less than smooth. UVA interviewed Elliott last week, moved on to Poindexter, semi announce Poindexter is the new coach, then rumors the interviewing process didn't go well, then he announces he's staying at PSU, then bring Elliott back and hire him. And why would Elliott be interviewing at Duke, the worst job in the ACC after 2 seasons as Clemson's OC? Seems to me the rumors that he was not on safe ground at Clemson might have had some legs. I mean, it's still better than sticking with an in house hire from Bronco's staff. But it's definitely less than ideal. And it sounds like UVA pissed Poindexter off in the process. And Jerry Ratcliffe, who is much more of a UVA homer than Doughty is for VT, has been somewhat critical today, and the folks at theSabre are pissed at him. Seems like some of theSabre posters believe he was the #1 choice all along, but if that's the case, why did they not hire him last week? I guess we'll get a better idea when we see how well he salvages this year's recruiting class and see who he brings in from the transfer portal.

Jeff Scott was the real brains at Clemson as OC. He ended up with the damn USF HC job this year. If he had only waited a year.

Out of curiosity who else was Wake looking at other than Clawson? Would be interested to see how they panned out over the years.

Pete Lembo was the most talked about alternate candidate. I think it’s safe to say the correct choice was made

Yeah, Elliott was only the OC at Clemson the last 2 seasons. I checked out the Clemson board, and there was a mix of pro and anti Elliott. Sounds like a very decent guy, and we'll see as a coach. Whatever the case, the process was wanting.

I believe he and Scott were co-OC for a long time before that.

And really, how can you know how good an OC is with Lawrence, Etienne and a pro level OL?

I think Wellman was pretty locked in on Clawson from the get go but the popular names among fans were Pete Lembo(Ball State), Pat Narduzzi(Mich State DC), Matt Wells(Utah State), Bob Diaco(ND DC), Chad Morris(Clemson OC). I think Coach O might have tried to put his name in or at least that was a rumor. IIRC, Lembo was the guy everyone thought would be hired until Clawson was announced.

Same was true this year when the OL was not as good, DJU was terrible and WRs had a lot of drops. Maybe Clemson just misjudged on a bunch of recruits. Maybe Elliott is as good as Scott. I sure don't know. But maybe we get a better idea when we see who commits, who de-commits and who transfers in and out. The 2 head scratchers for me were UVA's hiring process and why a guy of Elliott's stature was interviewing at Duke.

If they had futures on college football coaches, would bet against UVA's future with Scott at the helm. The Clemson offense was a disaster this year (except for the WF and S. Carolina games) under Scott. Clemson has too much talent for that. Feel like UVA football is heading for some dark days. Brennan Armstrong and a solid set of receivers hid a roster that had a lot of holes. With the talent drain from the coaching change and a new system that won't be as productive as it was under Robert Anae, UVA is heading for a major tumble.

I think you mean Elliot, not Scott, but otherwise you are spot on.
Armstrong was basically UVA’s whole offense. Look at the ND game when he didn’t play.

Ratcliffe is critical of uva, is that what you’re saying? And the saber is mad at who?

USF guessed and so far it looks like they guessed wrong.

Can't imagine having the ability to take a job you want that will pay you $Texas refusing because you would rather stay unvaccinated, I get he is making a lot of money at Auburn, but Washington is a better job in a area he is from. Just wild.

He’s from Idaho. They crazy anti-vax. What a dumb ass.

Yup. It was all Lembo until it wasn’t.

Wellman was at least right once.

It was fun watching a few posters sweating that pileon poster who was saying that Wellman was blowing it with Lembo. My second favorite part of the search besides hiring The Clawfense

Oh man forgot about him. He quite clearly had NO inside info.

I think I was all in on Kingsbury even though I had no clue whether he was a candidate or not.

Edit: he took the TTU job a year before Clawson was hired. I think I wanted to fire Grobe & hire Kliff earlier
