I think we all expected he would be pretty good, but did anyone expect he would be this good? I admittedly don’t watch much Oklahoma basketball, but did he look this good last year or did he up his game significantly over the summer?
Hope to be wrong, but the Alondes Williams commit seems like a nothing burger. He's a below average defender, and not an offensive factor at all in his two years at Oklahoma. Seems like a Jalen Johnson that doesn't shoot as well. Trying not to overrate Hildreth or McCray, but I'm not jazzed about Williams taking minutes from those guys, unless next year's WF team is competing for an NCAA bid, and Williams is playing materially beneficial role. Hard to see that happening.
I think you are a nothing burger.
I look at it more as a low risk, high reward pickup. Underwhelming at OK in terms of shooting, but still gave them almost 20mpg. I think he's a scorer first, which should be helpful with the loss of Dubose. He also has size and athleticism. If he can figure out how to shoot again (he shot the 3 well in high school and in juco), he could be a solid rotation guy on a VERY young team. He's also been on winning teams.
Worst case, he seems like a guy that can compete hard for minutes in practice, providing some experience and making everyone a little bit better.
Williams is a dunker, not a shooter. Not much of a defender. But he brings experience playing for a winning program and a HOF coach and depth.
none of our returning guys can take it hard to the hoop and dunk over someone so even if Williams can only do that, he has a role on this team. My only worry is that McCray, Hildreth, and Lucas are all competing with him (and he's older, stronger, more experienced) and with the landscape the way it is in college basketball, it's hard to see all three of those coming back for their sophomore year if they don't get playing time as Frosh.
Hard disagree. Lol that you would compare him to Jalen Johnson. Do you really think Johnson would have contributed on last year's Oklahoma team? Alondes will carve out a nice little roll for us next season.
Williams was at the back end of Oklahoma's rotation. He was 7th in minutes for the Sooners and they didn't have depth. Look I love Forbes, and he's elite evaluator of talent; so, if Forbes likes Williams, that's good enough for me. Feel like five years from now, we will strain to remember Alondes Williams played for WF. The ceiling for WF next year is an NIT bid and that may be a reach. If WF is going to be mediocre, I'd rather give the minutes to the players (Hildreth, McCray, Lucas) that will be difference makers when WF is an NCAA Tourney team.
Then again, will readily admit that I watched OKlahoma play multiple times this year, and didn't know who Alondes Williams was until he almost got a backdoor cover for me against Gonzaga. So, my thoughts on the significance of his future contributions for WF are less than zero.
Pilch I always appreciate your insights and know that you know your shit, but I'd be hard-pressed to think that Williams won't be an upgrade from our role players over the past decade. He's a definite take and there's zero risk involved.
Always gotta take in account that Lucas/Rob/Cam are Forbes' guys, so it's less likely they'll transfer after 1 season for not getting the PT they desire.
I'm pumped for Alondes.
marsh is not ready
They've sucked me all the way back in. May God have mercy on my soul.
does not seem like it, but he's a freshman behind three seasoned big guys, so hopefully he can get up to speed. the biggest issue for him is that he's just too slow on the uptake for an ACC basketball game right now imo
In one of the worst commitment evaluations in boards history, Pilchard referred to Williams as a "nothing burger." Others were higher on him, but he didn't get a ton of fanfare.
I love this guy so damn much.
Connor and Josh Graham are tweeting that it is the second besides Duncan.
I love this guy so damn much.
