Defensive Coordinator Coaching Search Thread - BRAD LAMBERT IS COMING HOME

Clawson just continuing to make all the right moves. Looking forward to the official announcement and getting to work on next season.

Need linebackers. Need 2 more playable linebackers, or next seasons defense won't be any better than this year, regardless of coaching.

But yeah, I'm super pumped for Lambert.

Are there any available worth a damn in portal or ones that may can sign in Spring signing period?

That would be good. Hopefully Lambert can coach up some younger guys. We’ve signed some pretty decent talent on paper.

There are definitely some guys we are looking at. I imagine we get at least 1 in the portal, which makes up for loss of Taylor. As of now, our only LB's with any experience are Smenda, Chase Jones and Chase Monroe. It's not a given Monroe will be able to stay healthy. Quincey Bryant looks to have a lot of raw potential to work with.

I'm hoping we can put 20 lbs on Garnes and he can make the switch.

That could work. I’m usually not a huge fan of trying to get guys to bulk up to play outside their natural position but we definitely need more speed at LB.

Andersen is a little short but he seems like a prime candidate for the Luke Masterson transition with his speed deficiency.

Almost wonder if we try to stick with some variation of a 4-2-5 for a year while we shore up the LB position.

From what I've seen in my research, one Lambert's priorities is scheming around players and putting them in the good positions to succeed. Would be curious what happened with Purdue year over year, but I suspect with a good coordinator we'll see a lot of benefit just right there -- it felt like maybe some guys were asked to do more than what they were capable of. I'm no football expert, but my least favorite anecdote of the season was when we apparently tried to craft a while whole unique scheme and created a new position for the Navy (ETA: ARMY) game that fell apart as soon as one guy got injured -- seems like a classic example of suboptimization that they love talking about in MBA classes.

The other thing I'm encouraged about is the emphasis on aggressiveness (which might help with the above). Saw some Purdue fans talking about how successful the shift from their previous "bend but don't break" philosophy to Lambert's scheme.

I may regret saying this but I feel that almost ANYTHING would be an improvement over this season. Also, I didn't know we played Navy this season. Maybe that's why our gameplan fell apart? :)

Isn't the Rover position supposed to be a hybrid type guy? Demetrius Kemp and Thomas Brown? seemed to do really well for a while. Quincy Bryant and Garnes seem like they would be perfect for that role. I was always under the impression that spot was meant for a guy that was maybe 10-15 pounds too light for linebacker, but could run well enough to cover the flats and still contain the edge on the field side or be used as a QB spy. Seems like the last couple of years it has been used more as just the 3rd string safety or a hybrid safety/corner.

Wake Football Instagram account just posted a “welcome home” to Lambert. Guess it’s officially official.

Oh by the way, IN YOUR FACE Tony Elliott and UVA.
