2021-22 Wake Forest Basketball Season - 25-9 (13-7), KP#33

My recollection is that Rice was down to BC or Wake when recruited, and Skinner persuaded him there. Rice killed us for four years.

Pretty sure he didn't want to be a backup to CP3... who then left anyway.

Les tweeted this is the 2nd most ACC wins since 2009-10, with 10 games remaining

Date and record when we reached 7 conference wins, by season:

2020- Never
2019- Never
2018- Never
2017- Feb 22, 63-59 vs. Pitt, 16-12 (7-9)
2016- Never
2015- Never
2014- Never (regular season), March 12 (counting ACCT), 81-69 vs ND, 17-15 (6-12) (1-0 ACCT)
2013- Never
2012- Never
2011- Never
2010- Feb 9, 92-85 vs. BC, 17-5 (7-3) (proceeded to win the next game vs GT, then lose 4 in a row and 6 of our last 8)

We are technically tied for first in the ACC at the moment.

Update:

now 17-4, 7-3 in conference

KP has us at 72% or better for the following 5 home games:

Pitt (93%)
Miami (73%)
Notre Dame (72%)
Louisville (86%)
NC State (82%)

we're a 21% underdog at Duke

with recent results, KP likes our odds better, but the other 4 road games are still virtual toss-ups:

Cuse (57%)
FSU (49%)
NCSU (63%)
Clem (52%)

5-0, 0-1, 2-2 gets us 24-7, 14-6

interesting that as of this second on KP, the WF page projects us to finish 13-7, but the ACC page projects us to finish 14-6 and in sole possession of 2nd.

How many times have we finished the regular season at 24-7 or better? Maybe never? I don't think we have ever won more than 27 games in a season, have we? I'd be happy with 4-1, 0-1, 1-3 - which would make us 22-8, 12-8... 2-1 in the ACC tourney would leave us at 24-9 on selection Sunday. If that is a worst case scenario, or even a middle of the road scenario, that puts us worlds away from where we have been for a decade.

I am so excited about this team but trying to keep my expectations at least somewhat grounded.

We’re 5th in win percentage. We’ve played 3 more games than Duke and ND who has kind of been off the radar. ND has a big home slate vs. State on Wed, UVa on Sat, and Duke on Mon. If they win all three, they’ll be in a very good position at 8-2.

I recall it being down to Rice and Joe Dukes for our last minute CP replacement

My recollection was that Wake showed interest but only offered late, after CP3 declared for the draft, but it was too late at that point

ND has to have the easiest ACC schedule. They only play Duke, Wake, Miami, FSU and UNC once. Granted, the games against Wake, FSU and Miami all come on the road, but playing BC, Pitt and GT all twice will boost the record. Although they lost to BC by 16, which I’m not even sure how that’s possible based on what I just saw from that team.

We have 5 of our 7 ACC wins by 16 or more. FIVE halfway thru our ACC schedule and only 4 more games against the top 7 teams.

How many 15+ point ACC wins do we even have in the previous decade? I bet not more than 5.

Forbes has a whole lot of tools in his toolbox this year. The season-long core 6 can score, pass, rebound, handle the ball and defend at a very high level. How many teams have a 7 footer and a 6-10 guy who can bring the ball up court? Not many.

Now Forbes is adding Monsanto to the mix. A great shooter, defender, rebounder. As he works himself into game shape, it will become a core 7.

Then there are the guys I call "situational players." Carter Whitt for more ball handling and play initiation and dropping dimes. Cam Hildreth for tough D on opposing wings and slashing inside. Matthew Marsh for those times when Wake needs some more beef inside. Marsh is one of the most physically imposing players in college basketball.

Been following Wake since I was a kid during Bone's tenure. During the Prosser era the team always seemed to start strong and fall off in February. Still recall when everyone were wary when February approached because the team would hit a cold spell.

After ten years of darkness, this team seems to be getting stronger as they go deeper into the season. Uncharacteristic of the earlier years under Prosser but greatly appreciated by everyone who love the Deacs! I don't know what Forbes may be drinking but sure would like some. Know somewhere Skip would be smiling now. If this group stays healthy, there could be a big surprise when they visit "Ratface's Palace" next month.

Lunardi has us as an 8 seed in his latest update. The matchups don’t matter right now (has us plying Creighton, then Auburn) but the games would be in Greenville, SC, where I would think a good Deacon turnout would occur. That would be fun.

I kind of like being unranked right now. I really like it in fact. It feels like we’ve discovered this thing, and it’s ours, and we love it, and we’re not quite ready to share it with everyone else yet. Everyone else can find out about it in March, when things really matter.

Nobody much follows college basketball until March anyway, so ranked or not, pretty easy to stay off the radar until the tournament. Auburn at #1 for the 1st time for example is a nice story, but it's not like they've got a Crimson Tide fb target on their back.

Rankings are college basketball recognition of playing well. Thus Wake team is and has been playing well. The only puzzling loss is the one at Louisville. Wake is one of the best defensive teams in the country. Ranking should reflect that. This team has improved immensely since November. I would like to see the rankings reflect that.
