Non-Political Coronavirus Thread

How are pointing to kids' education, mental health issues, drug overdoses, neglected actual medical care, the inflation that is suffocating the country, etc. me, me, me? You're just so blinded to reality in your fear of Covid that you can't see anything else. But yes, hide behind your mask that will solve all problems, Batman.

Nobody is saying that. To be clear, some of those you are claiming are so blinded by our fear of COVID are the ones that are actually going to patients with covid to care for them. I will continue to wear my masks as long as we are overwhelmed by covid cases.

I work in a teaching field where the entire North Carolina labor force makes 15-20/hr, my dad is a kitchen manager that makes the same and manages employees making 12/hr, yet somehow neither of us, nor our coworkers know about this stupid fantasy welfare that 2&2 keeps bullshitting about. It’s make believe. The government is not paying people to stay home. North Carolina and other southern states have some of the most stringent unemployment policies in the whole country, and COVID unemployment benefits ended last summer.

That's what happens when you keep paying people not to work.

We're at $300 a week now for those who qualify?

That's basically the federal minimum wage for a 40 hour workweek.

Nobody who is living paycheck to paycheck is working only 40 hours a week, and even my local fast food places are offering compensation way above the minimum wage.

The arg that people are being paid not to work isn't a very good one, imo.

Are you referring to my suggestion that you (and ELC) should

I don't see an assumption in there.

You responded:

I said that you should do two things at the same time: wear a mask and shut up about it. Even if you're doing the former you're certainly not doing the latter.

What's the other assumption? That all this whining is selfishly motivated? I directed that to 2&2, but if you took it personally then perhaps that's something to think about?

no, you directed it at me

Every negative argument here (ELC, thatguy, etc.) is all me, me me. You can only think about yourself and how you're inconvenienced. Just wear a fucking mask for a little longer and shut up

In addition, I make about $300 a week as a grad student and there's no way I could survive on this alone.

I have a side hustle, and a partner, and am blessed to not have to carry the major expenses of a kid or having to drive to work everyday, etc.

Bro, you're better than this.

The Government is dumping $1,000 into my account every month for additional child tax credits. I make well over $100,000 a year.

I'm not even on unemployment, but if I were, I'd be getting more than that.

I think you guys are taking your standard of living and imposing it on what you think others would need to continue their own lifestyle.

I live in the country. All my neighbor needs to live is enough money to buy a fifth of gin every other day. He's (comparatively) fucking SWIMMING in money and hasn't worked for years. He has his single wide on the top of the hill and is just KILLIN' IT.

He used to be a mechanic, but now he's just a drunk.

It is reality in rural America.

literally how though

seems like you can make a lot more money than unemployment (post-CARES) already by working and $300 a week is just above the poverty line - it's barely tenable in a city like Pittsburgh I can't imagine trying to live my income elsewhere

seems weirder to assume that all poor people need is a fifth of gin and a trailer to live in as if they are all single dudes w/o kids or familial obligations.

For the record you can just Google the Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment claims data. The North Carolina unemployment rate as of December is only 3.7%, and unemployment insurance claims are currently lower than they were before the pandemic. As of January 15th there are only 20k unemployment claims in North Carolina. You all *really* need to gfto with these bullshit welfare queen anecdotes.

and then you spend those tax credits on fifths of gin got it

lol at thinking that people in rural America use daycare as you understand it. You guys already heard from Mako how we do things.

That's what I'm trying to communicate to you guys - you're so out of touch that you don't even have a foundation to understand the problem.

It’s the same thing of feelings over facts so I suppose it fits the coronavirus thread. Just anecdotes of rural America when numbers, real fucking numbers say otherwise. So put it in the pile with the vaccines don’t prevent infection because look at all the people that are vaccinated and got infected.
