Notre Dame Game Officially 8 PM on ABC

Agreed. I don't think there are too many ND grads in the NC area (maybe Charlotte?), and the walmart fans prob aren't lining up to pay that much when they're an average team. I know there are a good amount of fans in the DC area, but they're probably heading to Fed Ex to watch the ND/Maryland game the week after.

I get this, but do you really think these are the fans paying $200+ for a ticket? Gotta imagine those are the ones at home watching on tv or checking the highlights, showing their "true" fandom when ND is winning.

Have you been to a local or state fair? Who is parading around with the $300 stuffed animal? The same "prize" that would cost $15 at a local Costco or Walmart?

You would be AMAZED what some people will spend an almost entire paycheck to see.

A fool and his money are parted every single day.

Yeah, but we both know this fan values that stuffed animal far more than watching ND in person.

Priorities, they no have them.

I feel like I should chime in about ND fans since I'm dating one.

My perception is that they don't have many "Wal-Mart" fans anymore since they haven't been very good in the past decade. They do, however, have a fair amount of alumni and their alumni are absolutely fanatical about the team. They could pump out 3-9 seasons for 11 years in a row, and probably 80% of the ND alumni I know wouldn't care. They don't care that they haven't been good in a while; they want to win, but Notre Dame football is, to them, about more than just wins and losses: sportsmanship, tradition, and generally being everything that 60+ year old men salivate over when they think about football being the "bees knees." I'm very serious about this. They have more money than god, but they make very few upgrades to their stadium because boosters will flip a shit if it ever changes.

This is all to say that I don't think we'll see bandwagon Notre Dame fans in North Carolina. First, what wagon is there to jump on? Second, it's North Carolina. I do, however, think we'll see a good 10k fans and a good amount of them will have some connection to the school. Even if they didn't go to school there themselves, it's usually a situation of "my father went there" or "my grandfather went there" or "I'm Catholic" or something like that.

The fans should be pretty nice though. Some of them still have big heads, but in general they recognize that they're the laughing stock of the nation right now. The ND fans I've met have all been awfully self deprecating. I actually think they're a better football team than my girlfriend does; she speaks about Notre Dame the way we speak about Wake Forest. Even when they're ahead in a game, I'm always hearing from her about how they'll blow it.

Long winded, but there you go.

They have a ton of Walmart fans. You just don't see them because you're dating an alum. A ton of people in the Northeast jumped on the bandwagon back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and their children are still on the bandwagon because they didn't go to college so they don't have another team to pull for.

Stop reading right here to post this. There are definitely still a ton of ND fans who have no connection to the school. Sure they might not be as obnoxious now that ND sucks, but they're definitely still around.

Yeah, ND still has a ton of bandwagon fans. The difference is that those fans are now in their 50's and 60's. They don't have the young fan base anymore outside of alumni. They aren't building new fans. ND's large fan base will be around for a while, but it is aging and will soon start to be in serious decline, but that is 10-20 years off.

I think this is generally correct. My wife is from a big midwestern Catholic family and there are lots of serious ND fans, none of whom went there.

Generally accurate, but they have a HUGE bandwagon contingency. Granted, I'm from Indiana so my perception on alums v. non-alum fans is a bit skewed.

I see random people wearing ND articles of clothing all over the place around here. I can only assume it is similar in other midwest cities.

They are the UNC of the Midwest.

Every Catholic I know (which includes half of my cousins) is an automatic ND fan. If they actually attended another university, their alma mater MIGHT be their #1, but not always. Strange...

As a Catholic, I have a father, brother, and many cousins who have ND as their #1. None of them went there.

can we please stop calling non-alumni fans Walmart fans? With such a small alumni base, we should understand better than anyone how important it is to have fans that have no direct connection to the school.

Calling someone else's fans Walmart fans seems so LOWF.

Agree with the Wal-Mart comments. Comes off as incredibly elitist and insults a lot of our best fans. Sure I have used the term in the past, but hopefully I have limited it to describe some yahoos from tar hole nation. :)

Every Notre Dame fan I know that isn't an alum just adopts them because they are Catholic.

I think they actually have to sell your school's stuff at WalMart before you can be considered to have a "WalMart" portion of your fanbase. I've yet to see the section of a WalMart overflowing with cheaply-priced Wake gear like I have with the Carolina and Duke stuff.

There are definitely some non-alum Wake fans who sit around me in Section 9, and they are always loud in pulling for the Deacs. Those are the kind of fans we need, and I don't think anyone dumping on Carolina's "WalMart" fans is saying anything at all about non-alum Wake fans.
