I feel like I should chime in about ND fans since I'm dating one.
My perception is that they don't have many "Wal-Mart" fans anymore since they haven't been very good in the past decade. They do, however, have a fair amount of alumni and their alumni are absolutely fanatical about the team. They could pump out 3-9 seasons for 11 years in a row, and probably 80% of the ND alumni I know wouldn't care. They don't care that they haven't been good in a while; they want to win, but Notre Dame football is, to them, about more than just wins and losses: sportsmanship, tradition, and generally being everything that 60+ year old men salivate over when they think about football being the "bees knees." I'm very serious about this. They have more money than god, but they make very few upgrades to their stadium because boosters will flip a shit if it ever changes.
This is all to say that I don't think we'll see bandwagon Notre Dame fans in North Carolina. First, what wagon is there to jump on? Second, it's North Carolina. I do, however, think we'll see a good 10k fans and a good amount of them will have some connection to the school. Even if they didn't go to school there themselves, it's usually a situation of "my father went there" or "my grandfather went there" or "I'm Catholic" or something like that.
The fans should be pretty nice though. Some of them still have big heads, but in general they recognize that they're the laughing stock of the nation right now. The ND fans I've met have all been awfully self deprecating. I actually think they're a better football team than my girlfriend does; she speaks about Notre Dame the way we speak about Wake Forest. Even when they're ahead in a game, I'm always hearing from her about how they'll blow it.
Long winded, but there you go.
