Ukraine is game to you?

No, it’s just good to remember that devaluing currency is like the opposite of a targeted strike, it actually hurts the most vulnerable citizens much more than the ultra rich - it’s the same economic principle that measures the impact of flat taxation vs progressive taxation.

So it fucks poor people a lot worse than the rich. So it’s basically like every war in human history.

I don’t think there’s anyone here who doesn’t know that.

I don't mind rehearsing the argument because it's a correct and important one that often goes unstated.

I’d prefer the world fixed inequality before punishing Russia but that’s not going to happen.

Sometimes inequality always feels like just one crisis away from being worthy of attention.

I'm not sure Putin can last through March, maybe not even through next week. The entire economy of Russia is about to come to a screeching halt and no police force will be able (let alone willing) to stop the protests which will happen when there is no cash and credit cards are not accepted anywhere. There are already hours long lines at ATMs which are empty.

“We got money for wars but can’t feed the poor” has been getting a lot of play on Instagram stories over the last couple days.

I don't know enough about the economics of WWII in America but I'd be curious to know if there's a exception to the rule in industrial economies during wartime that are participating but not directly affected by war.

And whether poorer Americans actually benefited from that.

Inequality is the crisis. War, sanctions, and the rest are just symptoms. If we lived in a world in which everyone else is comfortable with adequate life chances, there would be less war and support for bad actors.

Putin taking over Ukraine is just going to exacerbate that crisis. So it’s contrarian empty virtual signaling to post what everyone knows about war and sanctions. MHMD isn’t the only knowledgeable moral actor on this board.

Sure I guess there were economic benefits to increased economic opportunities during WWII for people at home who weren’t among those who died or were wounded abroad or the families who lost their loved ones.

Of course, we have seen economic inequality increase dramatically while the US has been engaged in war in Afghanistan and Iraq and spending trillions on our military. So pointing to WWII is very outdated.

virtue signaling accusations really do be the enthymeme that's in vogue rn

So in three days we’ve gone from talking about Putin finishing off Ukraine and invading Finland and the the Baltics, to talking about impending Russian collapse and Putin not making it another month in power. Thanks, Brandon?

This is like a bkf tribute post

I do want to go back to the Alta Argumentation conference so maybe I write the virtue signaling enthymeme paper

I think Ukraine is still in a world of danger - Russia has yet to use their more aggressive weaponry and have for the most part avoided urban warfare which would lead to massive loses on both sides. But the reaction of the EU/US has been much stronger and more unified than I expected. It looks like they've decided they will give Ukraine all the resources they can to defend themselves while trying to cause Putin's removal internally.

I hope the run on banks tomorrow spurs more of their people into protest. Soldiers have and spend money too, but they likely are getting zero truthful news about home.

Russia is not China. Their people don't exist in a complete information vacuum. You can bet they have some sense of what is happening.

This also isn't the Russian people's first rodeo with currency devaluation, although it will be the fastest and likely the most painful in a very long time. They know the drill. Cue the run on any good that people believe can hold value in Russia.
