Wake Forest Basketball Recruiting: Juke Harris Commits!!

Yeah, I was joking bc we obviously just had a combo-guard who played tons of PG and won ACC POTY.

That stinks, I was really hoping that we could land him. Maybe way to early to be concerned, but I feel like we needed him bad.

I know stuff works differently now with the transfer portal and it’s possible to build a team entirely that way, but should we be concerned at this point that we currently have a recruiting class of 1 player?

i've mentioned this - but people get a little salty by the question

Yes but not as concerned as we would be if we didn’t have four sophomores coming up and the transfer portal.

And I don’t know why. This is basically shaping up to be the McClinton class…

I don't disagree that the optics of this class aren't good.

I fully believe Forbes and staff will have us breathing easy in a couple months. To me, there isn't any reason to doubt that Forbes will assemble a high level squad again for next year. He's the read deal, and will keep us in the top half of the ACC as long as he's at Wake. We might take a step back in win total, but not talent next season.

I'm not saying we bring in Alondes Williams 2.0, but we will bring in a few from the portal that make up for the loss of his production.

The kicker is going to be Jake. Bring Jake back and we will be VERY good next year. If Jake leaves, I still see top-7 in the ACC.

Don't sleep on Cam, Rob, and Damari. I'll be curious to see if Lucas can carve out a role.

As fans we need to start understanding much better how program building works.
Some of it can be learned from Dave Clawson and the football program.

1) It takes time
2) Winning is a process
3) Coaches and players have to fit together well
4) Recruiting is a 24/7 activity that is part communication, part reputation building, part execution, and part commitment to excellence.
5) Consistency is essential

Basketball is somewhat different because of the transfer portal and early exit to the draft from a 13 player roster. So while this past year was a huge improvement it is not an automatic sign that everything is fixed. Whether it's the 1 man recruiting class or the uncertainty of transfers in or out I think it's fair to continue to be skeptical until we have recruiting, coaching and playing producing results every year. But next year is only year 3. It will take time and we need to stop worrying about who's leaving the program every year as some have said. Winning programs don't do that. They plan their rebuild ahead of time every year.

Year 3 with Forbes, middle of the conference should be the floor of expectations.

comparing this class to McClinton's class is completely ridiculous when A) we are not even done recruiting for this year , B) roster management in college basketball has changed dramatically in the past 2 years. How we recruited McClinton's class has more in common with 1982 than it does 2022. C) Keller actually seems like he has some talent , unlike the aforementioned player and d) Steve Forbes is our coach , not Jeffrey B or Danny Manning. If we only have one guy signed up a month from now or especially in two months, then go ahead and freak out. Until then freaking out is telling me you don't understand 2022 roster management without telling you don't understand 2022 roster management.

Greg was a 4-star Top-100 prospect before his injury.

There aren't HS players to recruit anymore in the 2022 cycle. I mean, there are, but they're not very good. There weren't in 2013, either, which is why we ended up with HOF Miles Overton to join Greg.

Roster management has changed dramatically in the last 24 months, but until then was pretty consistent.

Seems like the staff will recruit an overseas kid and spend the rest of the slots on transfers. That's a risky way to vault a program into sustainable recruiting, but it can work. As I mentioned on TOB, Musselman/Arkansas is a good example of how this can work. I think we all know what happens when it doesn't.

The tone policing around "freaking out" is getting out of control on all of these boards. Feels like Chrispy is gonna come by and ban me or something.

This isn't personal. I've followed Wake recruiting on a granular level for almost 20 years and these types of classes don't typically work out for us.

Is anybody freaking out? I’ve seen board freak outs and this is not one.

Who is the overseas kid?

It’s certainly a concern that Forbes has only successfully recruited 4 kids out of US high schools in three classes so far.

It's a whole new world in recruiting the last two years with instant eligibility for undergraduate transfers. The coach-team-player dynamics are much more like those in Junior colleges. No longer is it necessary to grab some minimally qualified HS guys just to have enough players to practice. Instead, go get some good, experienced guys from the portal. Sign guys in April and May, have them practice all summer and have them play starting in November. Not ideal, but much better than signing two star HS players in May just for the bodies.

Nobody is freaking out. I’ve been told to shut up, wait until a later date, and trust Forbes like 50 times on two boards, though, for even asking questions lol

I don’t think there are official names yet, but the staff is scouting/recruiting.

Agree with the latter point.

You are asking the same premature questions on two different message boards and making outlandish comparisons to Greg McClinton’s recruiting class. I guess it’s not freaking out, but it is certainly not asking the right 2022 questions .
