Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

DeSantis is on a roll!

Of course Republicans hate tenure, because it's designed to prevent exactly what Republicans want - the ability to easily fire (or at least silence) teachers and professors who hold political or cultural or social views different from the political party in power.

Pretty cool that a guy who won by the slimmest of margins is now a dictator

I mean, at least he does shit (awful as it might be). Democrats win and cower in fear that any thing they do will cause them to lose the next election.

He came right out and said it. DeSantis said: “Tenure was there to protect people so that they could do ideas that may cause them to lose their job or whatever, academic freedom"

Just read an article today in which a Democratic state representative in Michigan made news (and got over 9 million twitter hits) when she directly hit back at the accusations from a GOP colleague that she wanted to sexualize and groom kindergartners. What was interesting was that the article noted that her hitting back at her GOP accuser was an unusual tactic for Democrats, most of whom still try to just ignore GOP attacks, because that it will make it all go away.

"McMorrow’s direct response is a contrast to what the national Democratic strategy has been to the increase of Republicans claiming they are a party of “pedophiles” and “groomers.” Vice News spoke to a number of prominent House Democrats last week about [Marjorie Taylor] Greene’s comments [that Democrats were the "party of pedophiles"].

“I don’t even really pay attention to anything she says because she has nothing rational to say. It seems to me to be a ridiculous allegation,” said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., a member of House Democratic leadership. “We’re focused right now on getting things done for everyday Americans: lowering costs, addressing gas prices and inflation. They can continue to peddle lies and conspiracy theories.” “I see polling that shows that that outrageous characterization is landing with some folks,” Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., told the outlet. “But you also don't really want to give oxygen to the land of misfit toys, which is where this is coming [from].”

Yes, just ignoring these coordinated GOP attacks worked so well in shutting down the CRT issue and illegal immigrants/border crisis issue and so many others. It is hard not to get the sense that many Democrats are just afraid of these people, and Fox News and other right-wing media. Maybe hitting back is the answer, not something to be avoided like the plague.

Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Embracing Trumpism/White Supremacy/Sedition

Republicans: “Democrats want to defund the police!”

Democrats: “No. We want more funding for police! It’s Republicans who voted against funding for police in HB whatever.”

Republicans: “Democrats are the party of pedophiles and groomers!”

Democrats: “We’re focused right now on getting things done for everyday Americans: lowering costs, addressing gas prices and inflation. They can continue to peddle lies and conspiracy theories.”

Pathetic.

This place is down the street from my in-laws in one of the reddest areas of Florida. They always have good anti-Republican signs.

I would have to think Disney has created enough buffers and protections that a single vote wouldn’t cancel their whole thing.

Barca, I'm not sure what you mean by "cancel their whole thing." This wouldn't force the parks to close, but it will hurt their earnings and make basic operations and infrastructure much more difficult for Disney World. This bill would also increase the tax burden on Val Demings' district and create a ton of problems for her husband Jerry, mayor of Orange County (Orlando).

Yeah I meant the cancellation of their special district or whatever it’s called. I’m very familiar with Reedy Creek and what it entails and know that the state senate passed a bill to cancel the district but seems like Disney would have prepped for this and created enough red tape that one bill can’t undo it all.

Disney will lawyer up to prevent the bill from taking effect, but I'm not sure what they could have done to prevent this bill especially given how quickly it happened.

There’s probably a zillion different legal entities and corporations and who knows what else

It would have been more effective for them to tax the special districts and craft exemptions so that only Disney had to pay, but they hate taxes so...

the Villages has the same type of special district so would be easy for Disney to point out they weren't targeted. because the message from DeSantis is that special districts are bad, so therefore all should be banned, right?

The hidden objective here is to hurt Val Demmings and her husband's political prospects by shifting the tax burden onto the residents of Orlando, the political power base of Demmings. Demmings is the presumed Democratic opponent to Desantis in the Fall.
