CT: What's the deal with those guys in The Pit?

My oldest child is aggressively terrible at sports, but she loves sports. So phan and townie, how do I convince her to get into distance running?

Isn't she still good enough to letter in multiple sports at those teeny mountain high schools anyway ?

Are we going to be playing meaningful football in 2025?

I enjoy Wake football, but have no interest in college football otherwise. I must admit that I am not too interested in college basketball these days outside of Wake until championship week. I still love the tourney though. I do not understand how people find postseason college football the least bit compelling.

I’m generally interested in college football and I agree with this post wholeheartedly. Bowls have been bad and gotten worse.

The majority of the country disagrees. Bowl tv ratings for two random teams are higher than duke vs unc in basketball. Generally, outside of NC, KY and KS, nobody gives a shit about basketball. That's why the ACC is about to implode.

It doesn’t make sense to me that all these massive tv contracts come when viewership and attendance is down and going down.

I'll keep going to Wake games and tailgating and having fun no matter who we are playing. Probably won't be interested in watching whatever the SEC/B1G becomes since it'll just be worse football than the NFL. The closer a sport gets to being a minor league for the pros, the less interesting it is (see college basketball, spring football leagues etc.)

So we cut the cable cord in the last couple of months...with no explanation other than a very mysterious "remaining balance" designation, they've now sent me a bill for ten cents. And allowed me to pay it online with a credit card.

Netting them...some negative amount.

:dumb:

I just checked my credit score and I want you people to know that I'm better than the rest of you.

is there a thread for discussing outdoor TVs?

My screen porch will be done in a couple weeks and I'm trying to figure out where/how to mount a TV. It'll be pretty well protected from the elements so probably just going with a budget 4K TV instead of a TV specifically designed for outside makes more sense, right?

Are the TV numbers going down or up? The home TV experience has gotten so good going to the games is not that important anymore.

Get drunk at the tailgate, come home and watch it on a 85 inch TV in 4K. Sounds better than being surrounded by the masses.

I think numbers are down compared to sports in the past but the numbers are still way better than any other kind of TV. Live sports are basically the only thing you can sell ads against because everything else on TV is being watched streaming or DVRed. As long as companies are willing to pay huge amounts of money to get eyeballs on their commercials, then live sports will continue to get huge TV contracts.

There's probably also some interesting data about demographics of who is watching sports. I think a lot of Gen Z only engage with sports via highlights and memes on social media sites instead of watching games live.

undoubtedly my remaining interest in college and Wake sports will continue to go down but i'm also fine with it

I have had a budget tv (about $300) outside and mounted on the side of my garage for about two years (taken down from about November - March). It's not protected at all from the elements and I live right outside of Chicago. I invested in a $30 waterproof cover I put on when we're not using it, and it has worked like a charm. There is no way I would spend $5k on an outdoor tv. It would take 15 of these budget tvs to break for me to get to that number.

I put up an older (~10 years) 55" TV on my screened in back porch when we moved into this new house in April 2021, thinking it would last a few months and I'd replace it with a newer, cheap TV of similar size.

It still works just fine.

It's protected from the elements (somewhat). Not in a position where it gets direct sun. Doesn't get rained on, but I'm sure it gets misty out there sometimes or it will get splashed in a big, windy thunderstorm. But it gets plenty hot out there in the summer and cold in the winter.

So yeah, I'd say just put a normal TV out there and expect that it won't last forever... But that it's WAY cheaper than any other option.

I don’t think there is anything incriminating here:

jk, pretty nice porch setup, i hate tvs over fireplaces but that's probably all you reasonably have on a screened in porch so makes sense there
