It depends. If you do well in a job like that, you're pretty competitive for assistant level jobs that pay more and you can get time towards tenure.

Townie's dad has that low cost of living in a huge college town too. It wouldn't surprise me if Columbus is the most expensive place to live in Ohio.

My dad got his first tenure track job at Wake back in like '91. It came with rental assistance on our first family home, then lending assistance on a mortgage, plus a membership at Graylyn. By the time he left Wake around 2008, they were slashing health benefits and making him pay to park at work.
