2023 Football Scholly Tracker | In: Roberts (A&T LB), Ganious (Nova DT), Merrill (Vols WR)

I wonder if any schools will just forego facility improvements and go all in on NIL from their boosters? Maybe Wake is well-positioned there in that most(?) of our facility improvements are already done or in the works.

Like will the crazy ass locker rooms at places like Oregon and Clemson even matter when some school with shitty facilities can pay players so much more?

Personally, I’d rather be good at football than bball but I know that opinion is in the minority. I also readily admit that we have a much easier road to being continuously relevant in bball (despite the football v. bball results in recent memory).
I don't think this is the minority opinion at all. Particularly for a lot of current students/recent grads that have experienced a successful football team but never a successful basketball team.

I mean I started at Wake in 2014 and since I've seen Wake go 1-8 in the ACC tournament and 0-1 in the NCAA (First Four game). Even if that basketball success does come, it won't be the same as football for me because I can't relate to being a student/recent grad cheering for a legitimately good basketball team.

I get that perspective. And I would have it to if I didnt know better in this one case. But remember Drake didn't ask for offers by going into the portal. He's never even mentioned the portal. These offers came in absolutely unsolicited - and by the way illegally - to his representation by programs that are completely out of control. I think Drake is getting less than half from UNC than the biggest offers that came in for him. And not only that, he really only wanted NIL from UNC so that he would have enough to spread out over his offensive linemen and receivers etc.
What a beautiful story!

The money is in college football not basketball and of course in sports money drives everything. Plus, the good basketball players stay just one year and in many cases they don't play college ball at all. College basketball has it's own set of problems.

it is time to just go ahead and divorce minor league/development sports from academics
I agree but don’t allow the team name to be the school name. Maybe like “demon deacons” or deacs But not wake forest. And the university should be paid for the use of the name.
If you are gonna make it professional make it true professional

^^^ Welcome to the days of NIL. Most college QBs that are getting paid more than the other players spread some to their offensive line. Not unusual at all. If he didn't do that, it would be surprising. One of the many "quirks" in this stupid screwed up environment. Again, I know Sam Howell did it with his O-line so I don't think Maye would have had much choice even if he didn't want to do it. If Hartman did it - and I think he did too - somehow I don't think the same level of cynicism would appear.

What I am saying is that when a team is playing for themselves and not for my school why should I root support for them? Why not pick a school that always wins
And therein lies the problem with the new landscape. They are professional athletes borrowing our college stadium on a given Saturday. Not only that, why do I care if we lose if my team is playing a team whose players are tonning it with NIL and mine isn't? I mean of course they should kick our ass. Who cares?

Same thing if pro sports didn't have salary caps.

guitar, not being antagonistic - you absolutely framed it as he was getting offers he’d have to be crazy to refuse, and then Carolina stepped up at least to match it somewhat, and now he’s saying he could never leave Carolina, and you don’t see how that doesn’t add up. Your personal relationship is blinding you a bit, which is understandable.

You’re able to be realistically cynical about the rest of college sports right now and you should probably apply a dose of that here.

The problem is how does the NCAA police NIL when NIL isn't even coming from the schools? The NIL collectives are independent entities. It's all just way over my head how to make it work.

And pay their tax

I think you are speculating on all of this. Let’s deal in facts.

If you have personal knowledge about Howell and Hartman, say it. If you don’t, give the basis of your knowledge. I don’t think Hartman would appreciate you spreading BS about him on this board. Could care less about the UNC hearsay.

Not clear if this is earned income or a gift or what

I would assume that in the case of a highly-paid NIL Qb or other player that spreads it some among other players, the NIL would handle whatever portion directly to the other player. Certainly not going from one player's hands to the other. Beyond that how NIL is treated is just a massive can of worms.

If a walk on goes in to the Portal does it even matter? They are still a student and still enrolled. I’m thinking about a guy like Jackson who absolutely deserves a scholly, but if no other school offers then he could just come back next year. He hasn’t posted any offers yet, so maybe if enough other Wake guys enter the portal we can possibly get him back.

I firmly believe that if you’re on the two deep then you deserve a scholarship offer from your school.
