Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

I believe the GOP said during the Obamacare fight that they had to stop it from taking effect, because once it did people would like it and it would become very difficult for the GOP to abolish it. Which is pretty much what happened, but it's telling that the GOP recognizes that these types of programs are usually successful and popular and so their goal is to block them from being created in the first place. God forbid the government creates new programs designed to help people who need it. Their views of government welfare and social programs hasn't changed much since the days of Herbert Hoover.

That’s basically what Pelosi infamously said, “We have to pass the bill, so that you can find out what is in it — away from the fog of the controversy.”

But having to hold more than one vote to decide on the speaker would be embarrassing - not only for Mr McCarthy, but for the Republican party too.
No other candidate running for the speakership for the first time has failed to win in the first vote for 100 years, so such a failure could weaken the Republicans' credibility within the House.

Kevin McCarthy struggles for support ahead of Speaker vote

Republican credibility? I think we should be well past this.

Yep. Remember when jhmd used to admonish us ivory tower liberals for telling good hard-working Americans “what was best for them”?

As I've documented before, pre Dump I always identified as a Republican. I was a business guy who resented Dems who too often looked like they were endlessly just giving shit way.
A moderate Pub who was very "liberal" on social issues (pro choice, pro gay rights, anti evangelicals etc.) but still very conservative in my belief that the Country needed to be strong militarily, keep secure borders and be fiscally responsible. My Grandparents were poor immigrants and I was raised with a strong work ethic and a "God helps those who help themselves" philosophy. Help those who needed help but eliminate entitlements for those who simply chose not to work or make the effort. Don't get me wrong; I never trusted politicians on either side of the aisle and still hold that feeling today. I'd rather not vote (2016, 2020) than support anyone I had no use for. Where I am going with this diatribe is how sad it is watching the Party of my past fall into such total ignorance and plain stupidity. I hear that worthless POS McCarthy struggling to maintain the Leaders role and amazed instead of more moderates in the Party challenging him its the "right wing faction" preventing his confirmation.
F'in really? Talk about failing to read the room. They shit they bed in the mid terms and still they are trying to push the Party further right?? They even promise that loonie Marjorie Whatever a coveted committee assignment for her support??? Really?? I have never been more disgusted at the state of the two Party system in this Country and the Pubs in particular. I'm done now.

The whole “socially liberal but fiscally conservative” idea is impossible irl.
it basically means pro gay marriage & weed (maybe abortion, too). things that don't cost much to taxpayers....so nothing to help pay for things like taking care of the non-aborted children.

It’s also dumb because taxes are relatively low, so you weren’t really asked to pay for any of it were you? We run a deficit that continues to grow but won’t ever be called in and if it was it won’t be in you lifetime. It’s a sham position to take.

They hate the deficit that we have because taxes are so low.

Plenty of money in the coffers to increase the defense budget AFTER ending a 20 year war.

It seems the “socially liberal, fiscally conservative” set were all taken by a hoax. As usual it was only coded language, in this case meaning “lower taxes especially for the wealthiest taxpayers as much as possible”

now that the old clever repugnant GOP is out and replaced by these downright moron repugnant GOP folks, the palatable messaging side falls away and you’re left with true believers who bought all the coded language as fact.

Kind of like how jh’s “school choice, vouchers, etc” nonsense (which was seen through by pretty much everyone here) has been replaced in the broader dialogue by crude and direct “burn books, censor the pedophile teachers, racism and LGBT is a hoax” messaging.

Even if “socially liberal, fiscally conservative” was real, they still reliably voted for socially conservative Republicans.

if i didn't know better, i'd say the Dems were electing the speaker today based on those speeches. They were having a great time up there.

I’m so curious to see what happens on the second vote and how long this goes.

For once it appears that it's the Democrats who have their shit together and it's the Republicans who are disorganized and in disarray, so why not enjoy it? Eat some popcorn and enjoy the infighting and drama and bloodletting on the other side.

Socially liberal, fiscally conservative is simply a way (lie) for a republican to pretend they are not in lockstep with the rest of their party and their extremely unpopular agenda. Spoiler alert: they are.

Yeah it’s nice that the shitbags that they cater to in their party are now also being shitbags within the party. You let them in, you get to deal with their antics.
