2022 Carolina Panthers Thread - Move to the 2023 thread

Wow. I must be crazy in thinking that Payton is a good proven coach. I didn’t know there was anyone at all that wasnt convinced of that. You learn something new every day. I feel like I just came back from Mars. I’ve got to try my best to get on board with the Payton sucks reality.

I think now you are intentionally overreacting because people didn’t like your idea.

It’s not that he sucks. It’s that the franchise improves much more by using the #9 pick than by hiring him and giving it to the Saints.

It’s not my idea. I’m definitely not smart enough to come up with it. It’s been reported pretty regularly as a possibility for the Panthers. And I know for sure Tepper has been considering it. He interviewed Payton for a reason and it was not a result of reading my post.

I think the two most important dudes for an NFL team is the QB and the head coach. You can solve one for sure with Payton. And he can likely get more out of Darnold based on his record with QBs. You’re not going to get anything close to a sure thing QB at 9. Again, that’s my point.

Tepper is getting deeper into running the Panthers and being a part of Charlotte. He and his wife just moved into their home on Quail Hollow after extensive renovations. He knows he’s made mistakes. He wants to do better. I think he’s going to make a good decision with the coach and draft.

plus no one actually knows if Payton is a good coach without Brees.
Brees missed 9 games in 2019 and 2020. Brees retired after the 2020 season. Payton coached the 2021 season without Brees in 2019-2021, Payton went 17-9 without Drew Brees, during that period. BTW, his QBs during that time were Trevor Sieman (4 starts), Jamies Winston (7 starts), Teddy Bridgewater (5 starts), Taysom Hill (14 starts), Ian Book (1 start0 -- mediocre to bad QBs. FWIW, Payton was 17-4 when he started Bridgewater, Winston or Hill, which is unbelievably good.

I mean you don’t need to be smart to come up with it, if it’s a Tepper idea by default it’s more likely a dumb idea since he’s shown so far he knows jack shit about running a football team.

I was just about to post this.

Just curious. What would Payton have to do to impress you? Trash QBs started more than half the games that Payton coached over his last three seasons, and he won at an elite pace. Payton leaves, and the Saints with the same trash QBs implode.

Well the Saints cap situation was also absurd during those years if I recall correctly. They punted all their money problems down the road to try to maintain a competitive team, then Payton left once those problems became unavoidable.

I mean he's a fine coach he's just not give up a first round pick to a division rival good IMO. So he gets us 3 more wins with Sam Darnold. Where does that leave us? This year maybe the playoffs, but no guarantee next year.

He went 9-8 the last full year he didn’t have Brees, that’s pretty much perfect for the Panthers!! Also the argument isn’t that he’s not a good coach, it’s that he’s not a good enough coach compared to other options to give up substantial draft capital, and even more so to a division rival. Would be perfect Tepper move to also completely ignore franchise history with Payton and his bounty hunting of Cam, one of the only iconic players in Panthers history.

You just dont like Payton. That’s fine and as good a reason as any I guess for not wanting him here.

What does an iffy rookie QB get us? The year after? He might be a wasted pick. Lots of risk there, especially with this group.

Steve Smith on QB evaluation

He sounds like Peter Brand talking to Billy Bean in the parking garage in Moneyball. I think he's right. The NFL has no clue about QB evaluation. They employ lazy or medieval thinking about "measurables" and arm strength. I think there is an answer out there that's waiting to be conceived and utilized.

I’m not even a Panthers fan and like Payton just fine, it’s that these dumb ideas are floated and then it’s held firm that they must be good ideas because some source from the organization floats it as a possibility and they have to be smart. Meanwhile all evidence points so far to Tepper being a shit owner and the Panthers organization being a mess so the ideas may actually be shit but who are we to question the wisdom of Nicole Tepper.

Guitar: it’d be Payton for the 9th pick
Everyone: hmm he’s a good coach but 9th pick is too much to give up
Guitar: so you hate America then
Lol!!!!! You are damn funny. I love it.

Damn I just broke off a crown and crunched it. Eating a damn cracker. No idea what to do. Eff
