MBB Game 21: @ Pitt - Wednesday - 7 pm - ACCN

Guys, our NCAA Tournament chances are done. You aren’t going to make the tournament when you don’t have a single player on your team who can guard a lamppost. I really want to like this team. They seem like great guys. They simply can not play defense. We are deep enough into the season now that we all know what we are—we are going to score points, but against anybody decent we are going to give up more. I mean, we even gave up a boatload of threes to LSU and App. The 18 tonight didn’t happen in a vacuum. Whether it is scheme, lack of effort, or a combination of both, we are a BAD defensive team. Period.

Pomeroy says WF's defense is 161st in the nation, giving up 103.2 points per 100 possessions against an average team.

Last year, of the at-large teams invited to the NCAA tournament, zero teams gave up that many points per possession. One team gave up more than 100 points per 100 possessions: Davidson, at 101.9. They lost in their conference championship, got an at-large bid, and then went out in the first round.

This team is not NCAA-worthy. Period. I'm not sure that it's NIT-worthy. I agree that if past is prologue, we'll get pummeled at Duke.

Scanning Pomeroy quickly, I think the last time a team with a defense as bad as WF earned an at-large bid was Ok State in 2017. That team had the #1 offense in the country, and lost in the first round of the conference and NCAA tournaments.

Horrible attendance last night but their students wrapped the floor so created excitement appearance. Smart decision by Pitt alums structuring their stadium that way.

Jeff Capel about to lead his 3rd different program to the NCAA tournament. The record is 5 and I could see him doing that. He’s only 47 years old and not likely to stay at Pitt forever.

Everyone watching on TV could tell there was nobody in the crowd at Pitt’s on campus arena you massive doofus

Yes, congrats to Jeff Capel on (maybe) getting Pitt to the NCAAs for the first time in his 5 years there.

Also congrats to him to cracking 7 ACC wins for the first time in those 5 years! 3-15, 6-14, 6-10, 6-14, 7-3!

Truly one of the best to ever do it! Huzzah!

I guarantee Pitt alums had no say whatsoever in where students sit at games.

Capel

1 NCAA in 4 years at VCU
2 NCAAs in 5 years at Oklahoma (both with Blake Griffin)... FIRED
EIGHT YEARS WITHOUT A HEAD COACHING JOB
0 NCAAs in 4 years at Pitt

The only reason he still has a job is because they didn't want to pay to fire him. He's not likely to stay at Pitt forever because they are going to fucking blow next season and they can finally fire him.

I thought when you hire a young guy, he stays there for a long time and builds a legacy at your school.

If he's just going to leave when he finally tastes success, then aren't you just giving him on the job training for no reward

Would you bet your house on him making a free throw? Not a jab. It’s a fact.

I wouldn't bet my house on anyone making a free throw but he made two that we needed him to make with the game on the line in front of 14,000 people in Madison

He’s sucked at Pitt. Period. He got fired at Oklahoma. K gets him the jobs.

He’s going to make more than he misses. He’s just not someone who you want on the line late in a game.

Amazing how the season changed in a three game stretch. We go from “if we beat UVA we will be ranked for the first time in a decade!” To “back to the bubble and looking in from the outside”

I know y’all don’t like Capel. He’s obviously had quite the success on the court both as a head coach and an assistant. The numbers are the numbers. You either make the field of 64 or you do not. Capel has been there like 10 times since we last were. A former Wake ball boy too. We should be happy for his success.

As for the alums and stadiums, the structure of the stadium is about the only thing alums control. That’s never more obvious than at Wake Forest which has now played in its current venue for over 30 years—mainly because the alums have overwhelmingly supported its continuous use through the decades.

I don't dislike Capel. I just think it's funny that you think he's been a successful head coach when the same record at Wake Forest would result in you saying he's garbage.

He's been to the NCAAs 3 times in 13 seasons as a head coach. That isn't good for Oklahoma or Pitt.

He was also fired in disgrace for the shit he did at Oklahoma... Which was bad enough that he didn't get another head coaching gig for almost a decade.

It’s just too bad you’re not winning on your tax returns enough to have some influence on the structure of the stadium

The path to the tournament stays the same as I see it (not easy, but doable):

1. Win all remaining home games
2. Beat ND
3. Beat one of State, Duke, Miami, or Cuse on the road.

For every game in category 1 we lose, we need to win one more in category 3.

Each road loss narrows the pool in category 3 as well.

Perimeter defense has to get better or this is all a moot point. I will say, that despite our terrible defense, Pitt had a sensational shooting night. You don't make 18 3's against anybody unless you're on absolute fire and take a lot of them. Pitt obviously was hot and took 37.

Y'all know I love all things duke. They obviously have had quite the success on the court. That's undeniable. There is no more special place to fap than on coach k court, sweating your ass off and covered in spittle from a good profanity laced tirade directed at opposing playes, fans, and referees alike. You either use that spittle for lube as the good lord intended or you clean up and chase an ambulance.

Sure the place was rockin' when yo... I mean we... were winning but that's immaterial. Being a 5k fan gives plenty of perks like TWO g damn steaks and the inability to affect the change I so desperately crave. Then again, maybe it's the attention. Anywhosey I'm gonna go pray (aka scream obsceneities) at my scheyerface alter as I'll be able to do for the next 30 years. As loudly as I want. Cause, you know.
