2023 Carolina Panthers thread - HOF Julius Peppers

One of the better OLs, yes. But zero WRs, zero TE threats, and a currently-unsigned journeyman RB. It is arguably easier to backfill those skill positions than the O-line, but combine that mess with the usual rookie QB learning curve, and this season is going to suck ass. As I've said on here for years, DJ Moore stinks as a #1 WR, getting rid of him is fine. So I like the confidence of making this move and the compensation was fine because giving him up is better than giving up another 1st. But this is the wrong year to do it, none of these QBs is anything special. Hold your wad one more year. Premature ejaculation at its finest.

Unless I guess the plan is to draft Stroud, shelve him Corral-style for one year so nobody sees how bad he is, then use him as throw-in trade bait to get Williams or Maye next year.

But what if the 2025 QBs are even better????

More fun when you have Frank Reich and Jim Caldwell, both known for being exceptional in QB development.

Meh. DJ is one of those guys if you don't follow him you don't realize how good he's been. Bears fans probably actually watched his stats and saw his highlights for the first time and got excited. Also the Bears have a horrible WR history.

The Panthers have a horrible WR history for a much shorter time and DJ is 4th and has less than half as many yards as Smitty.

I am very curious to see whether Fields struggles to throw the ball are his own inability or a lack of offensive talent surrounding him.

Credit to the Bears, because by this time next year they will undoubtedly know the answer to that

Walter Payton has the 2nd most receiving yards of any Bears player in my lifetime. Curtis Conway has the 2nd most receiving yards of any WR in my lifetime.

not going to talk bad about DJ. great wr, great dude. wish him the best. him and mclaurin have had the worst QBs throughout their careers. his contract is super team friendly too, i can see why the bears insisted on him.

but this had to be done. now we need pass catchers. better TE FA class then WR FA class, but also a super strong TE draft. there will be a really good TE at 39, maybe josh downs and zay flowers options there as well? for FAs don't think OBJ is a real option, DHop will be traded but for what would take? a 2nd? not sure about that.

I’d rather go FA TE and draft one or two WRs. A proven FA TE would be a massive improvement without being a massive cap hit. Thomas and Tremble would be fine enough behind Gesicki for example.

I just don’t feel great about an offense led by a rookie QB, second year LT, 3rd year WR1, and a rookie TE. Get a veteran somewhere and TE makes the most sense.

I'll miss DJ but holy crap it is so much harder to get a franchise QB then it is to get a number 1 WR. He will be good in Chicago but he's not so good that the panthers pass up this deal.

It took the Panthers a long time to get a legit franchise WR too.

Seeing how great DJ became overnight per Bears fans is kinda funny
Bears fans are pretty heavy on the kool-aid. Anyone who has expressed the smallest amount of concern or skepticism about Fields’ passing ability has essentially been run off the Internet.

It’s the years of offensive wilderness. The slightest bit of hope and we tend to lose our minds

from the Bears’ perspective, you have decent weapons so either Fields is for real or he’s not and you can make your move on a QB with your new assets next year

just gotta put some of that cap space into the OL this year and it’s prove-it time for Fields and the coaches

I have no idea if Fields can be a franchise guy. But I also realize what I see as an archetypical franchise QB has changed a lot and is what makes it difficult for me to see if he is one.
