2023 MLB Thread -- World Champion Rangers - Hot Stove Warming Up - Soto to the Yanks - Ohtani's destination unknown

It feels like MLB just can’t accept the way things are. Miami and Tampa have proven to be terrible moves, even with those teams having some measure of success. I doubt Vegas supports a team. I guarantee Charlotte won’t. Nashville is questionable too.

Tampa is an interesting one actually. Fan interest and TV ratings are always through the roof. I really think the Tampa issue is the stadium. A new stadium, probably in Tampa proper, and i don't think you see attendance issues. this year they are already off to a decent attendance start (granted an early Red Sox series skews it)

It's the building, not the city

I assume you primarily mean location which I still don’t fully buy. If people wanted to go then they would go. Regarding the building itself, I’d watch my team play at a little league park with movable bleachers so I don’t fully buy that either. Oakland is a different story to some degree. That stadium is a legit health hazard.

Not here they wouldn't. St Pete is surrounded by water. The only access to the town is by the bridges, and they get backed up pretty badly.

People who live in Tampa just WILL NOT cross the bridge to go to St. Pete...not for anything. It's a cultural thing. Let alone for a sterile environment like the Trop.
I'm sure other folks from this area, current or former, would back me on the Tampa to St Pete crossing.

That’s fair. I’m not familiar with the area so you definitely know better than I do.

They said Vegas would not support a hockey team, and the Golden Knights sell out every game. MLB will be very popular in Vegas. In addition to a growing population, fans will travel to Vegas to watch their team, gamble and do Vegas types of things. If the LV ballpark is near the Strip, it will be super-popular.

Give SLC a team. We want it. The expansion bid is pretty solid.

It’s easy to have a fanbase when you are new and winning. Let’s see what happens when the Vegas A’s suck and it’s been 10 years.

In addition to its own fans, Vegas will have the extra kick of all of the New Yorkers, Californians, Midwesterners that will go to Vegas MLB games to see their teams. There is a reason Vegas hosts college BB conference tournaments, FB conference championship games, bowl games, even Notre Dame played BYU there last year. People look for excuses to go Vegas. It will be the same when they have a baseball team. People aren't going to Oakland to watch the A's play the Mets. If the Mets play in Vegas, Met fans will go. Dodger fans will go. Yankee fans will go. Cubs fans will go.

I guess we’ll see. 81 home games a year is a lot different than a one-off college game or 9 NFL games.

Hope they are building a retractable roof stadium because it is about 110 degrees in Vegas in the summer for 3 months straight.

I've been to both Oakland and Tampa for baseball games. The Trop was inconveniently located, but was still a pretty good time when you got there. Oakland, in addition to the health hazard, was the most cheaply run experience I have seen. Long security lines only for the personnel to just ignore it when someone set up a metal detector, half the concessions were closed, it took forever to find a scorecard, and when I did, the opposing team was listed as the "Detroit Tigers Sox". Must be nice to get a public subsidy from another stadium after not investing in the one you have.

Also, "Mount Davis" is a real thing. The extra seats that Al put in after moving the Raiders back look large, and apparently block what used to be a nive view.

Yeah. Florida people don't really travel within the region. I guess it's a peninsula culture. Tampa Bay is a collection of hyperlocal villages. Anything outside of your neighborhood and the next one over is a "long way away." And crossing the bridge to go to St. Pete is a big deal. Take into account the traffic and going to games is a non-starter for most of the region. Pinellas County (St. Pete/Clearwater) has less than a million people and that's most people within 30 minutes of the Trop on a weeknight.

Looking to snap out of it, Dodgers moved Mookie Betts to SS last night:
