WFU Hoops: '23-'24 Roster Construction Thread: +Miller, Sallis, Reid, & Canka

I never claimed to know anything. Not my problem you all stubbornly insist upon assuming that a first round draft guarantee is the only reason a basketball player would leave our team. It’s a very America-centric perspective that college basketball and the NBA are the only worthwhile opportunities.
The NBA is THE goal for basketball players with professional aspirations everywhere. That's not America'centric. Just like MLS does not typically get the few elite talents from the States.
There would be uncommon extenuating circumstances for someone to choose another league over the NBA.

Real talk, being booted from a major conference is going to make college athletics fun again. It will feel different for sure, but a smaller regional conference with a round robin schedule and meaningful rivalries? Sign me up.

Plus we’ll be presumptive national champions in like every sport with our ridiculous facilities advantage. Gonna feel real good to be the Alabama or Kentucky of whichever conference ends up taking us.

Guys, it's past time to throw in the towel on college athletics. At least past time getting emotionally invested in them.

I'll continue to be a surface level fan and give a little money to our NIL Collective until we are booted outta a power conference.
This pretty much. I’ll still care a little too much about football but other than that there’s no reason to care. College athletics is now up there with professional sports for me. Just meh

You’re absolutely right, my point was that a player might leave college early to play professionally, even if their chances of being drafted to the NBA were slim, and a European player like Bobi would probably be even more comfortable and familiar with playing professionally overseas than an American born player.

Gonna add that despite my best efforts to remain unemotional about the team and sports overall, I freaking love Forbes. I am bummed about this Bobi departure because of its effect on Forbes more than its effect on Wake.

I mean, I guess. But if UNC, State, Duke, UVA and Clemson all go to a super conference, I just couldn't get too excited about building a rivalry with UNCG.

Also, what will ruin it for me is if we aren't able to compete for the same national championships that UNC, Clemson, etc are competing for.

If we are in our own little regional conference but can still compete for the highest level of Championships, I could get behind it.

if the worst happens, WF is in the ACC - its just that the ACC no longer includes 7 or so schools. (I would imagine Duke gets a seat but what do I know)

so, WF, GT, Pitt, Louisville, BC, and Syracuse look to add membership

Duke is in a weird spot. I think they could end up being left behind in the ACC as well, despite their basketball pedigree.

I'm hoping the Julian Phillips mention earlier was someone letting some 247 info slip.
Nah, I was just looking at On3's top small forwards available and liked him.

I also like the Ven-Allen Lubin guy and don't know enough about David Jones of St. Johns, but like his scoring stats and board work a lot for a wing.

That's only true if you don't want us to get better. If we want to improve, then we just took a hit.
We all want the team and individuals to get better. Losing Bobi is a hit. That hit is based on projected outcome vs actual production during the season. Replacing last year is not a huge deal. Replacing the expected improvement is a much bigger deal.
Guess, I'm going with glass half full.

Or you could say fan anointed best player. And never did I say it's not a blow to Forbes' chances of getting wake into the dance and making noise.

Please list the other players on the Wake roster who are possible first round draft picks this spring.

I wouldn't even say that. Best NBA prospect and fourth best returning player from last year's team.

I get what you are saying, but, looking at his situation from the outside with so special insight at all, it would be idiotic for him to leave at this time without a solid likelihood of going in the first round, or, at an absolute minimum, near the top of the second. By all accounts he would be projected to have a big year at Wake next year and, with anything close to the expected level of continued development, move solidly into the first round. The difference between that scenario and playing overseas would be many millions of dollars. Sure, you have to put up with one more year of school (horrors!) and likely only high 5-figures to low 6-figures in NIL money, but the payout would be worth it...

So logic would tell me he either (i) got some sort of guarantee from one or more NBA teams that makes him feel comfortable with his future, or (ii) he has no confidence in his ability to develop and make a jump next year, or (iii) he doesn't care about money and would be fine going back to Europe and playing for much less. My bet would be (i).
