Wake Forest 2023 baseball season thread (Deacs end historic season with extra inning loss to LSU: Final record 54-12 and top 4 finish nationally)

I was just happy that it didn’t get any more chippy and lead to something stupid that would end up in suspensions. That’s what I was fearing while watching the last few innings. The things a Wake fan has to worry about imploding a great season…

ACC Series this week. All run Thursday to Saturday:

ND @ BC
Pitt @ NC State
VT @ WF
UNC @ Clemson
UVA @ GT
FSU @ L'ville
Duke @ Miami

WF plays @ UNCW on Tuesday. UNCW is 28-20. WF beat the Seahawks 8-6 in February.

Let’s go at least 3-1 and go into the ACCT strong.

just saw replay of game highlights and that was one obnoxious celebration by the Noles at the end for the last place team that isn't going anywhere. Hope it is burned into the guy's minds and sets them off another big W streak.
any walk off should get a celebration. it's a big ass deal to do something like that at a high level college. no problem with that whatsoever

would've sucked if someone punched someone in the nuts or something like that... hypothetically of course

#1 for 2nd week in a row. Would be awesome to go into NCAAs with overall #1 seed if can hold on for 2 more weeks.

Closing is a tough job. For most of the year, Minacci has been nails, but his last two outings:

  • He failed to hold onto a 3 run lead against BC
  • He allowed a walk-off against FSU

3.2 IP 4 H 4 ER 3 BB 7 Ks

Baseball is a fluky game, and its really small sample size; so, maybe those two outings can be just chalked up to the randomness of baseball. OTOH, we are getting to the part of the season, where WF will likely play close games, and winning or losing two games decides the season. So, think its fair to be concerned.

Add to that his ERA is close to 1.5 points higher than last year and yea it will be serious nervous time any time he steps onto the mound. Not sure if confidence or certain pitch not working for him as normal, but not the way you want to finish the season.

Didn't Minacci also give up 3 runs vs. Clemson in that game we were up 5-2 in (ended up winning 6-5)? Definitely a pattern this year.

Just to be clear, the rankings do not correlate with national seeding. There are a ton of different ranking sites.

The SEC is beloved. If we drop 2-3 over the next two weeks and one of the SEC teams on our heels runs straight through to an SEC championship then we will not be the #1 overall seed.
Just to be clear, the #1 overall seed is neat & all, but... but, we really needed to focus on being one of the 8 national seeds.

We could lose out (which we won't), and still have a national seed locked up with, room to spare.

We'll be hosting a super-regional after we breeze through the regional at the Couch.

Yes, I agree with all of this.

no way we BREEZE through a regional. Regionals are difficult. We are down to 2 starting pitchers. We've shown that our offense can be occasionally shut down. Nothing will be a breeze once tournament play begins.

I'm concerned about pitching depth, but WF's starting pitcher for Game 3 the FSU series, Seth Keener, threw 5 no-hit innings on Sunday and is projected to go in the first 4 rounds of the 2023 MLB draft. LSU would throw endless money bags to have Keener as their #2 starter. Even with Sullivan's injury status, WF has the best starting rotation in college baseball.

UNCW is a solid team, but the Seahwks lost their midweek game last week 24-5 to Campbell. So, hoping that WF's offense can light up the scoreboard.

On a unrelated point, the first and so far only 2022 MLB draft pick to make MLB was Campbell shortstop Zach Neto. He is starting at SS in a lineup with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Pretty cool.
