2024 Wake Women's Basketball Offseason - Grad transfer SMU PG Tamia Jones

I think building a quality WBB program is much more of a challenge. WBB has a huge gulf between the about 8-10 elite programs and everyone else. Much more parity with MBB.

The chick from Louisville went to LSU, not some program in the building phase.

The elite transfers are going to go to elite programs. That’s the case in any sport. There are also 8-10 elite programs in college football (maybe fewer truly elite programs), yet LOWF has managed to make a top 10.

Women’s basketball could do that too. But it will take a lot of quality recruiting, player development, and coaching. Losing Spear and not getting an impact transfer is a step backward after a promising “more with less” season.

Agree. Not sure how committed we actually are...yet.

I live in Columbia with my USC grad wife and we've followed what Staley has done here since she was hired from Temple. For whatever reason the school made a significant commitment to WBB years ago and it's obviously paid off. I'm guessing they identified WBB as a sport they could actually have some success with.

SC and LSU have both shown if you hire a good coach and put some resources behind her, you can elevate a program quickly. Funny how they did it differently. SC convinced a Philly girl to go down south. LSU convinced a Louisiana girl to come home.

From the outside, it seemed like SC hired the best coach they could get then quickly realized they could eventually build a dynasty. Wake is far from that but could make the tourney with comparable talent to the last few years and better coaching.

The only real commitment I've seen to women's basketball from Wake are the total upgrade on all basketball facilities - which to be fair is a big one, albeit driven heavily from the men's side. Agreed that absent solid financial commitment we aren't ever going to take much of a meaningful step in women's basketball. Making the tournament was a good time to build on some success and that didn't really seem to happen.

A shooting lab would benefit men's and women's hoops and give a significant edge for recruiting. Yes, there are a few elite women's programs, but ACC women's hoops are still truly elite with a major advantage over several other conferences. Wake women's hoops can still exploit that edge. Maybe this Truist deal can look good for women's hoops as well.

Every player gets a free checking account with Truist, access to wealth management services, and an extended line of credit backed from Ben Sutton?!

Women's hoops hosts Texas A&M in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Thursday, November 30.

Texas A&M was 9-20 last season including 0-11 on the road. Should be an opportunity for a win.

Niyah Becker is playing for Team Canada at the Globl Jam. They're playing Team USA on CBSSN right now.

She signed a pro contract to play in Slovenia.

Very interesting. I wonder if we will ever find out what happened there.

Someone try to poach her? Is she worried about (in)ability to bring in enough transfer talent to keep the good players we had?

Yeah, timing is a little weird, for sure. Also, have we brought anyone in from the portal yet?
