Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

If the ACC does offer a spot to Stanford, it needs to stipulate that Stanford’s football coach is not allowed to whine when they are scheduled to play at Wake with a 12 noon kickoff.
I think that was more of a Harbaugh thing than a Stanford thing. Harbaugh was, and still is, an asshat.

Maybe, but I and likely most WFU fans wish we were in the B10 right now. I don't think it was by their own clever design, but, regardless, Maryland ended up with a good seat in this game of musical chairs.
i wouldn't.

SMU has a nice on campus basketball facility so they are ready to compete. I saw us beat them there in 2003.

What about the current conference consolidation makes you think that natural fits matter at all?

Have you seen the SEC map ? It makes sense geographically (Confederacy notwithstanding). And adding NC and VA would just about finish it off.

SMU similar profile to Miami - academics, shady but once prestigious football program, lots of wealthy boosters, located in a big city. Win-win particularly if combination of being in big time conference and NIL gets the money flowing down there like it used to and we don’t pay them anything for five years. SMU should be higher priority than Cal. Stanford should still be first target and if that means Cal is attached that is fine. Tulane not nearly as attractive as the others but if they come for free, why not.

I remember being SMU in NCAA Football back in the day and winning like 8 straight natties and still not getting an invite to the Big 12. Game was cursed, man.

Is there any advantage to taking the PAC 4 leftovers + SMU and making the ACC 19 members? It's does leave room for ND, but realistically they aren't joining us anyway so WGAF.

I think we should just kick BC out. “Realignment sorry y’all.” No replacement just wanna flex

You might be surprised to learn that the median number of ACC wins per year under Clawson is 3 (mean is 3). Even if you throw out the first two seasons with 1 win each, it’s still 3 (mean is 3.6). If you throw out the first two years and the Covid year, it climbs to 3.5 (mean is 3.7). The means are skewed by the 7-win ACC season, which is great.

Most ACC fans wouldn’t be surprised their team has won about half the games that weren’t against Clemson and 10s peak FSU.

We used to be happy with the rare 3-5. Now that’s the floor which was the point of his post.

No to SMU. There is a reason that they are willing to give up a share for years. There are 5 Texas schools in the Big 12 and one in the SEC. So, the ACC is settling for the 7th most attractive school in Texas? When was the last time any SMU football or basketball game generated any buzz? This would be a move to just make a move.

is SMU a good school or just somewhere rich folks send their mediocre kids? I knew a few of those growing up.

ETA: tied with State and Indiana in US News. So I think my idea of it holds.
