Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

ECU? Even if UNC left the ACC, we have the NC market saturated. ECU brings nothing.

Oregon State is the biggest school in the State of Oregon (the Beavers enrollment is 10,000 students larger than Oregon), and would deliver the entire Oregon media market. Similarly, Washington State is not as big as University of Washington, but its still has an enrollment of 26K+, and alums over the entire Pacific Northwest, and in California. The ACC already added Stanford and Cal, and the thinking behind adding the two Pacific Northwest schools would be that the ACC would have the 2nd largest media market coverage among Power conferences in the Pacific time-zone behind the Big 10.

Probably makes travel a little more manageable for Stanford and Cal to be able to stay in the time zone for three schools each. Can't imagine it makes it any better for all the east coast schools. You could visit Cal and Stanford in a week, now you've got a trip to Corvallis to figure in.

Why would we take a school that actually shut down its football program just a few years ago? WTF?

They're both *** historically terrible in hoops.

Welcome our new brothers and sisters on this magical journey to historical competitiveness. Whoever (hello Wellman) came up with that phrase and thought it would make anyone feel better is a Grade A imbecile. I want a 30 for 30 on the genesis and discussion leading up to the use of that phrase as a means of fan management.

If the ACC takes any of the schools on that list over OSU and WSU, someone has lost their mind. Bigger brands, gives us all the things Pilchard mentioned, and makes the Pacific footprint incrementally more manageable.

I mean I'm just not sure my already challenged fandom could survive being in a conference with Louisville, Memphis and UConn. I'd legit prefer Rice, if we're going to start tossing out lifelines. At least then I could walk to a WFU game every 8 years or so.

Here is an actual article about those schools:

Writers appear to be assuming Clemson and FSU are leaving. For where? Neither does a damn thing to expand the SEC market, and so far, neither has any hint of an offer from the SEC. I still believe the only school the SEC would desire would be UNC.

Said all along in jest- the AAC?? ;)

Who wants them??

Also, we don't know (I promise we don't) what the various conferences want or don't want vis a vis Clemson and FSU. Many legal impediments to expressing interest or exposing actual conversations. And many people (media, "big supporters," etc.) who want to look like they know...don't.

FWIW, I feel pretty certain both could find acceptable new homes should they find a way out of this one.

I don't understand why the ACC would take any of those schools over Washington St and Oregon St. It might make some sense if we weren't already taking Stanford and Cal. But it seems like for logistics alone it would make more sense to take 2 more west coast schools.

They want to join the Ivy League so they can be considered tier I schools.
Seriously if the go anywhere it’s the BigTen. BigTen is using the Subway restaurant method of expansion: scatter them every few miles everywhere and a few are bound to be good.

Good point, biff.

Have a great story about Danny Ford dropping off cash in a duffel bag to Tony Rice's house
I met him in a bar in Chicago a few years back and he has the biggest fucking hands I have ever seen. Really nice guy and bought us a few rounds of shots!
